RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead a Design Management service by undertaking the following duties:

  • Lead the design process using commercial, contractual, programme/time awareness and technical skills;

  • Establish a client brief, with defined project benefits, scope, goals and deliverables;

  • Advise clients about their obligations in the development of a building design.

  • Lead, encourage and inspire design consultants to produce their best work using their full flair, experience, resources and talents in a cost effective way.

  • Take accountability for;

  • Ensuring the design process recognises current legislation, standards and codes of practice, where appropriate.

  • Monitoring that design information is of the right quality and keeps pace with project timescales.

  • Striving to eliminate health and safety risks in the design and financial risks during construction.

  • Tracking project deliverables using appropriate tools;

  • Monitoring and report on progress of the project;

  • Project evaluations and assessment of results;

  • Preparation and presentation of internal reports;

  • Lead business development and work winning activities as appropriate;

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Background – architectural or engineering design background preferred;

  • Typically 15 years post graduate experience

  • Qualifications – Relevant engineering or architectural degree and a Chartered professional of a recognised UK institution;

  • Experience – Have appropriate and relevant recent and extensive experience leading multi-disciplinary design teams on projects across market sectors. This experience should cover all design stages from concept to the production of construction documents and ideally include the management of external consultants. Projects should include those with a construction value greater than £100 million and either ongoing or completed within the last five years.

  • Sound knowledge and understanding of construction contracts and processes

  • Location – London based but willing to work within the UK and internationally on short to medium secondments as the business requires.

  • International experience is desirable.

  • Negotiation – able to negotiate; to find common ground with others and move projects forward obtaining an outcome which is in the interest of WSP, its clients and acceptable to other parties where possible;

  • People management – experienced in coordinating teams, setting group and individual objectives and providing support. A motivator who leads by example;

  • Project management – understand and be experienced in applying the principles and processes of good project management as commonly expressed by the APM, Prince2 etc;

  • Problem solving – must be able to demonstrate the ability to identify, classify and find solutions to problems. This should be at both the design and management level, such as conflicting design options and issues affecting the management of a project;

  • Manage risks & opportunities – understand how to capture and manage risks and opportunities, develop mitigation measures to ensure risks are minimised and opportunities maximised.

  • Commercially minded – understand business principles and be able to demonstrate how they have applied these to the management of projects. Demonstrate the successful commercial outcome of their projects;

  • Adaptive – be able to adapt their leadership approach to get the best out of individuals and organisations. Able to work around unresolved issues without ignoring them;

  • Willingness to learn –be open minded and willing to learn and explore new ideas outside their own experience and adapt these to their situation;

  • Professional ethics – demonstrate the highest standards of professionalism and corporate ethics;

  • Sector awareness – experience of delivering projects across various sectors is important. Candidates should be able to discuss and understand the key drivers for different sectors;

  • Business Development – Experience in leading and preparing tenders to clients as well as an interest in business development and work winning.
