Why this role matters

This isan integral role within BT Group’s Controllership team. We have recently split the External Reporting and Technical Accounting teams into two teams (although they will work closely together on many activities such as the preparation of the Annual Report) and increased capacity to ensure that we have sufficient knowledge, experience and capacity to drive quality in technical accounting papers across the Group.This role will provide the business with clear technical accounting guidance and advice and ensure new accounting standards are understood and implemented.

The position reports into the External & Statutory Reporting Director, and will work closely with all teams in that area (External Reprorting, Technical Accounting, Consolidation, Statutory Reporting, and Audit & Compliance).This team has good exposure to very senior stakeholders, including regular meetings with the Group CFO and External Auditors.

What you'll be doing

  • Drive the quality of accounting papers written across the Group to ensure they meet audit expectations.

  • Research technical accounting issues, and provide accounting support on complex business transactions.

  • Set and monitor adherence to group accounting policies using detailed understanding of accounting standards. Be seen as the authority and 2nd line of defence on all material technical accounting matters across the Group.

  • Monitor accounting developments, perform impact assessments for new standards, and ultimately implement any changes.

  • Summarise accounting issues in quarterly report to the Audit Committee.

  • Improve our documentation of key assumptions for our goodwill impairment model and improve the audit process in this area.

  • Deliver training to finance colleagues across the Group on new accounting developments and any other areas we notice a skill gap .

  • Managing and developing a team of 3-4 Manager level direct reports to drive them towards achieving their personal and our team objectives.

The skills you'll need

  • Qualified Accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA or equivalent) with significant post-qualification experience

  • Detailed technical accounting knowledge, including reviewing accounting standards and drafting and reviewing detailed accounting papers

  • Experience producing, reviewing or auditing IFRS financial statements

  • Experience managing multiple senior stakeholders

  • Experience of liaising with external auditors

  • Line management experience

  • Experience of SAP consolidation or financial reporting systems (BPC/S4) – Preferred
