Corporate Strategic Planning Director

Reports to: Director of Group Business Performance

We are looking for an exceptional individual to join as Corporate Strategic Planning Director, to head up our corporate strategic planning team. This is an exciting time to join Diageo to galvanise strategy across the organisation by developing deeper partnerships with the regions and deliver impactful change and growth. The Corporate Strategic Planning Director will play a key role in the definition and execution of the strategic planning exercises, annual strategic conference, and work closely with leaders across Diageo globally, including the Diageo Executive Committee.

Deliverables

  • The role of the Corporate Strategic Planning Director is integral to Diageo’s long-term performance. The responsibility for planning and delivering the strategy cycle, and the long-term financial planning, is fundamental to ensuring the execution of the overall Group strategy.

  • A key accountability is planning our long term (10 year) strategic forecast, and the 3-year strategic plan, including building the plans and supporting the presentation of these plans to the Diageo Executive Committee and the Diageo board.

  • Collaborating with senior leaders and key areas across Diageo corporate functions and markets is a prerequisite of the role. The incumbent is responsible for strategic planning across markets, volume, value and market evolution. Strategic resource allocation aligned to our growth ambition is a fundamental component of the financial planning process.

  • A key element and requirement of the role will be to translate macro trends and financial performance into growth. An external lens, particularly across consumer peer companies and trends enables the delivery of an aligned long term forecast for stakeholders to build detailed and robust market strategies. The incumbent works to embed across the business a growth-focused investor mindset to identify differentiated opportunities for long-term investment.

  • The role partners with senior leaders at Group level. The incumbent needs a deep understanding of the business’s financial performance and the ability to translate this understanding into actionable insights and robust recommendations for strategic development.

  • The role proactively partners with and build excellent relationships with regional leadership and local strategy teams to ensure strategies are holistically adapted across the organisation, harnessing a global and a local mindset to deliver on Diageo’s strategic goals.

  • To support Diageo’s Society 2030 agenda, this role oversees the financial planning and analysis of the ESG P&L including investment resource allocation. Working closely with ESG stakeholders, the role supports strategic decision making, financial analysis and corporate reporting for our goals on water, carbon and positive drinking.

  • The incumbent Inspires, leads and drives the performance of their strategic financial planning team with a focus on coaching and developing relationships and driving a highly proactive approach to leading strategic performance in the organisation.

  • The role brings a rigorously analytical and data-driven approach to setting strategic planning in the organisation and a drive for implementation and tangible results.

Experience

  • 10 Years plus experience within a senior commercial finance or strategic planning role

  • Experience and understanding of the FMCG environment

  • Big 4 Consultancy experience may be advantageous

  • Successful senior/exec stakeholder management experience

  • Team Management Experience

  • Investor relations experience would be advantageous

  • Credibility and gravitas to work effectively as partner to senior stakeholders

  • Outstanding and visible leadership skills; able to communicate vision and direction clearly and engage the wider team

  • Collaborative and relationship driven, able to be challenged and challenge others including CFO, CEO and members of the Executive Committee

  • Highly numerate with a data driven approach to problem solving

  • Proactive mindset to generate momentum behind opportunities in service of delivery of the Diageo strategy

Qualifications

  • MBA and / or Professional Accountancy qualification

Barriers to Success in Role

  • Inability to develop relationships and appropriately influence senior stakeholders.

  • Lack of “robustness” or ability to identify and then call out emerging risks or issues within the business.

  • Inability to recognise emerging risks and quickly respond and incorporate approach/actions required by the business.

  • Poor communication skills, including difficulty in analysing detail or telling the ‘big story’.

  • Not being an active listener who can incorporate the business views within our own perception of risks.

  • Inability to travel >10% of time in role on short term assignment trips
