ROLE DESCRIPTION

CoStar is seeking an experienced lawyer to serve in the role of Associate General Counsel, Head of Legal - International. The position will have significant responsibility and senior level contact in a medium-sized in-house legal department. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 years PQE, including experience at a top law firm and prior in-house experience with a multinational corporation. Associate General Counsel, Head of Legal - International position is a full-time position based in CoStar’s European headquarters office in London, but the successful candidate will work with teams in the United States, Europe, Middle East, and Asia and travel to CoStar’s offices in those countries.

The position will report directly to the General Counsel (based in Washington DC) . As a member of CoStar’s in-house legal department, this lawyer will have responsibility for a broad range of legal issues supporting CoStar’s international legal matters of all types, including intellectual property (copyright and trademark), customer and vendor contract negotiations, litigation, employment, real estate, mergers and acquisitions, general corporate work, and anti-piracy.

The successful candidate will possess a creative and practical approach to solving global business and legal problems, thrive in a fast-paced environment, have excellent credentials, show meticulous attention to detail and accuracy, and demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Primary responsibility for managing, coordinating, and supporting all legal matters related to CoStar’s operations in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia;

  • Build relationships with key stakeholders and partner with them to meet their legal support needs in an efficient and timely way.

  • Advise on the full spectrum of legal disputes, including content protection, intellectual property, contract, and others.

  • In collaboration with US-based privacy team, oversee privacy and compliance matters, including privacy and compliance advice and the development and implementation of related policies and procedures for the international businesses.

  • In collaboration with US-based team, negotiate customer contracts, vendor contracts, and leases.

  • In collaboration with US-based corporate team, support international mergers and acquisitions.

  • In collaboration with US-based corporate team, oversee general corporate work for the company’s international subsidiaries, including commercial agreements, Companies House and similar filings, and regulatory compliance (including data protection).

  • In collaboration with US-based employment law team, oversee international employment-related legal matters, including supervising an in-house employment attorney, partnering with Human Resources to investigate and resolve employment-related complaints, and advising on workplace policies and procedures.

  • In collaboration with the US-based anti-piracy team, oversee anti-piracy and content protection-related legal matters in the international business, including partnering with an in-house investigative team to investigate suspected piracy, representing the company in communications and negotiations with individuals and entities suspected of piracy, and coordinating with outside counsel in cases referred for litigation.

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to develop and implement policies and procedures for the prevention and identification of piracy.

  • Manage and collaborate with international external counsel, when required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree from reputable university with excellent academics.

  • England and Wales qualified solicitor (or equivalent European jurisdiction qualification).

  • Must have the right to work in the UK.

  • At least 10 years’ PQE, including experience at a top law firm and prior in-house experience with a multinational corporation.

  • Experience with relevant legislation in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, including without limitation the GDPR.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Excellent analytical and negotiating skills.

  • Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills, with ability to be flexible and adapt to frequently changing workload and responsibilities.

  • Acute attention to detail with ability to multi-task.

  • Must have initiative, be able to act decisively, work independently and exercise good judgement.

  • Knowledge of US legal system and experience working with or within a multinational company is desirable.

  • Fluent or advanced level in the following languages is not a requirement but is highly desirable: French, German, or Spanish
