Summary This position is in the Maintenance Improvement Team (MIT) of the Maintenance and Operations Section of Facility Management Service. It is designated as a "multidisciplinary maintenance mechanic", as the primary responsibility will be responding to the numerous maintenance requests that are received from throughout the Medical Center which require semi-skilled and journeyman level skills. Responsibilities Major duties include, but are not limited to the following: Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and failures and determines the extent of repairs and parts needed. Performs repairs, installations and modifications on a wide range of water, sewage, and other utility systems and equipment. Properly setting up and using powered woodworking equipment such as table saws, lathes, drill presses, scroll saws, planes, broken, etc. Reading and applying trade or manufacturer's instructions that explain procedures for thinning, stirring, and mixing paints. Working knowledge of how to properly maintain and Store tools of the trade such as brushes, rollers, scrapers, spray guns, compressors, scaffolds, ladders, cutting tools, stripping machines, and high-pressure washers. Receiving work orders via oral instructions on the location and the materials to be used. Having knowledge of basic plastering methods and techniques. Having knowledge of tools and materials (i.e., shovels, hoes, sand,) lime, cement, and water) required to mix mortar and break up lumps to obtain the desired consistency. Having knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic mechanisms and their principals of operation as they relate to a variety of kitchen, materials handling, and other miscellaneous mobile equipment. Removing damaged portions of structures or may remove walls in preparation for renovations. Interpreting blueprints, building plans, sketches, manufacturers' specifications, and technical manuals and be knowledgeable in shop math, standard formulas and standard shop practices. Performing repairs on existing bathroom fixtures such as commodes, sinks and tubs/showers, as well as unclogs drains and commodes. Having knowledge of measuring, cutting, bending and threading pipe, using caulk and sealants on joints, faucets and shower drains. Properly selecting the correct use of tools or equipment necessary for the completion of tasks. Performing the necessary research to provide descriptive information in order to assist with the ordering of the needed tools and equipment for the unit. Maintaining tools and equipment in a clean and serviceable manner and job sites will be kept in an orderly and hazard free condition, with a clean-up performed at the end of each workday. All other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: he incumbent must be physically able to lift and handle heavy objects while assembling, repairing and installing various electrical/mechanical apparatus related to the trade. He/she is also required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend and to work from ladders and scaffolds over and around equipment for extended periods of time. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
