Description

Hiring Ranges:

Equipment Operator I : $18.61 - $20.47

Equipment Operator II : $19.90 - $21.89

Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor, the Equipment Operator works as a member of a crew, operating a variety of construction equipment routinely used in maintenance projects in streets and drainage. The distinguishing factors of the latter, Equipment Operator II is the additional years of experience at the journeyman level, the CDL class, type(s) of equipment operated and the Equipment Operator II may also serve as a lead worker.

Principal Duties

** Current CDL holders are eligible for a $1,500 hire-on bonus.

This description is intended to indicate the kinds of tasks and levels of work difficulty required of the position and shall not be construed as declaring what the specific duties and responsibilities of any particular position shall be. It is not intended to limit or in any way modify the right of management to assign, direct and control the work of employees under supervision.

Equipment Operator I

  • Perform skilled duties operating a variety of light to heavy equipment used in the construction and maintenance of streets and drainage operations, which may include 7-yard dump truck, skid steer, small rollers, tractor shredder and backhoe tractor.

  • Inspect and maintain equipment daily, performing preventative minor repairs to assure safe operating conditions; coordinate equipment maintenance with appropriate persons or departments, to include maintaining accurate records according to establish procedures.

  • Participate in monitoring and maintaining appropriate inventory level of supplies, materials and equipment to efficiently complete work assignments.

  • Assist in the event of natural disasters as required; set up barricades, sand bridges and streets; check and inspect barricades for proper placement and visibility; cut and/or remove trees and/or debris from roadways; reset or replace traffic signs with portable signs; clear obstructions such as fallen trees; contain and clean non-hazardous spills and clear a variety of debris; patch sinkholes and set detours.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Equipment Operator II

  • Perform highly skilled construction and maintenance work with the ability to perform all duties of an Equipment Operator I, operating a variety of heavy equipment to include vacuum trailer, dozer, sweeper, loader, track hoe, haul truck, water truck, ice rock/sand spreader (dump truck), patch truck / or tractor & shredder / boom-mower and milling machine/or menzi muck excavator and other large vehicles.

  • Perform a wide variety of activities in support of streets and drainage maintenance which includes operating heavy equipment to implement temporary and permanent asphalt repair to streets or other applicable area; to cut, fill, mill, sweep, lay and compact material in the maintenance and cleaning of paved and unpaved right-of-ways and City-owned properties; to perform excavation and grading work and/or, performing other related public works construction activities.

  • Operate and maintain auxiliary mechanical equipment, electronics and attachments used with heavy construction equipment.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned, to include assisting with training co-workers as needed.

Qualifications

Required:

High School Diploma or G.E.D. State of Texas Class B CDL or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment, and maintain. Knowledge of the Texas Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD). Knowledge of safety practices and proceduresWillingness and availability for emergency response (subject) to 24-hour recall.

Equipment Operator II – additional requirements

High School Diploma or G.E.D., two (2) years additional technical training in a field related to area of assignment, and two (2) years of experience related to area of assignment; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience. State of Texas Class A CDL or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment, and maintain.

Physical Requirements:

Continuous outdoor activity, frequent sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing, exposure to extreme heat, cold, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor hazards, toxic waste/material hazards, occasional kneeling, crawling, carrying up to ninety (90) pounds, lifting up to ninety (90) pounds.
