Description:

POSITION PURPOSE

The Risk Management Coordinator supports the development, education, sustainment of application and

accountability of Risk Management program. Works in collaboration with leadership staff to promote an

environment focused on safety. The Risk Management Coordinator reports to the Risk Management

Leadership and has frequent contact with all levels of management and department heads.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

Education: Bachelor’s degree. Healthcare related field, preferred.

Experience: Two years of work experience in healthcare risk management, performance or quality

improvement.

Certification: Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM), preferred.

License: Holds Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Michigan, preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Ability to review, understand and analyze a medical record as it relates to reported events.

  2. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  3. Strong attention to detail with critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  4. Ability to gain trust and move forward with difficult and complex decision-making process

  5. Strong computer literacy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE

• Coordinates and administers systems for risk identification, investigation and reduction.

• Participates in the implementation and administration of Trinity’s TogetherSafe initiatives, including

high reliability and zero harm.

• Assists in the development of clinical and non-clinical policies and procedures with risk management

implications. Works toward the resolution of risk management problems through participation on

hospital committees, and discussion with management and staff.

• Manages the electronic incident reporting system, including reviewing and identifying events that

need additional follow up, while assuring appropriate documentation and data accuracy by managers.

• Trains new file managers in facilitating event reports.

• Utilizes electronic incident reporting data to recommend, support and implement risk reduction

activities.

• Works collaboratively with appropriate management and staff to respond to and review serious safety

events through root cause analysis and other methodologies. Follows up with departments regarding

implementation and maintenance of action plans.

• Maintains appropriate risk management statistics and files, ensuring confidentiality of and controlled

access to such information.

• Provides assistance and leadership to departments in complying with risk management standards.

Conducts and facilitates educations programs related to risk issues for hospital and medical staff.

• Assists with the management of professional and general liability claims, working with defense

attorneys and claims managers to gather information and documents, while connecting with potential

witnesses.

• Assists in preparing commercial insurance applications and provides information to Insurance and

Risk Management Services at system office for insurance programs for the ministry.

• Ensures identification of risk management issues in professional liability claims and follow up to

address and report as required to system office.

• Assists Patient Relations in review and follow up of patient complaints as related to abuse and

neglect allegations and other clinical/risk issues.

• Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner.

Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.

• Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and

visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among

appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.

• Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of SJMHS.

• Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure

personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices

immediately to management.
