Job Summary and Qualifications

The Carpenter is responsible for the repair, modification and fabrication of furniture, shelves, walls, floors, floor covering, wall covering, special fixtures and other devices made of wood, plastic, metal, cement, plaster and fabric.

The Carpenter is responsible for the preventive maintenance and repair of firewalls, fire doors and associated hardware.

The Carpenter is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the hospital buildings as pertains to carpentry functions. The Carpenter will do minor painting throughout the facility as required. The Carpenter will maintain and adequate supply of materials, through inventory control, to complete tasks. The Carpenter may be asked to move, install or modify fixtures. The Carpenter will be responsible for furniture repair within the facility.

The Carpenter may do other work as assigned by the Operations Manager.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Plan and layout wood, plastic, tile, wallboard and other building material for sawing, routing and fitting by hand or by machine.

  2. Build furniture and fixtures from raw materials using own drawings or from blueprint or diagram.

  3. Repair or refurbish broken furniture or fixtures.

  4. Order materials and parts from drawing.

  5. Repair carpets, ceilings, lay floor tiles, install cove base, hang doors, hang windows, build shelves, repair and install vinyl covering, cut, fit and install formica, cut, fit and install stainless steel on walls and around fittings and fixtures, patch roof leaks, patch brick walls and hang ceiling grid.

  6. Occasionally must prepare plans for and build complete rooms or special purpose areas using all carpentry skills unique to commercial carpentry.

  7. This position requires unusual creativity and the ability to take verbal designs and develop and build them. The ability to create solutions for unique problems associated with healthcare. The proven ability to produce exceptionally fine craftsmanship in work.

  6. Interprets hand drawings and converts to finished product; orders materials with correct application to the job and orders materials without waste; chooses correct hand power tool and accessories for job application uses the hand power tool safely using PPE; makes vinyl floor tile repairs and new tile installation; implements lockout/tagout procedure to ensure safety to self and others as directed by OSHA; identifies and repairs fire and smoke walls.

  7. Assists with vendor selection for new equipment based on departmental needs.

  8. Completes other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience:

High school diploma and one year technical school or equivalent preferred. Associate’s Degree or 2 years of technical school is desirable.

Training and experience: must have 5 to 6 years of experience in a related job or equal in training and on the job training, with at least one year experience in a healthcare environment preferred.

Minimum License and Certificates Required:

As required by trade

Equipment Utilized:

General hand tools common to carpentry repair, use of stationary saws and router and other carpentry tools as needed.
