Argonne National Laboratory Postdoctoral Appointee – CFD of H2/NH3 Engines in Lemont, Illinois

The Multi-Physics Computations group at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking to hire a postdoctoral appointee on the topic of CFD modeling of internal combustion engines fueled by low-carbon fuels (H2, NH3). The successful candidate will leverage high-performance computing (HPC) resources at the Laboratory to perform CFD simulations of low-carbon fuel injection, mixing, combustion, and emissions.

The successful candidate’s research will involve synergistic collaborations within a multidisciplinary team comprised of fellow postdoctoral appointees and staff scientists with computational fluid dynamics and machine learning expertise, with the goal to enhance predictive capability and scalability of multi-scale and multi-physics simulation codes.

  • Perform high-fidelity CFD simulations of complex physical processes in internal combustion engines (ICEs), such as fuel injection, combustion, heat transfer, etc.

  • Improve, develop, and implement CFD sub-models necessary to enable predictive ICE simulations, specifically for low-carbon fuels (e.g., H2, NH3), when using commercial or open-source CFD software (e.g., CONVERGE or similar).

  • Work in a multidisciplinary team involving engine modelers and computational scientists to run the simulations at-scale using both current large clusters and the next generation supercomputing architectures.

  • Work to consistently meet priorities and deadlines set by the research sponsor(s).

  • Collaborate with other staff scientists and postdocs in the group.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. in mechanical/aerospace/energy engineering, applied mathematics, chemical engineering, or a related discipline.

  • Experience with modeling three-dimensional multiphase turbulent reacting flow applications using CFD codes (e.g., CONVERGE, OpenFOAM, etc.).

  • Experience with multi-dimensional CFD internal combustion engine modeling.

  • Knowledge of low-carbon fuels (H2, NH3) chemical and physical properties.

  • Knowledge and experience with high performance computing.

  • Knowledge and experience with CFD code development.

  • Knowledge of parallel scientific computing.

  • Ability to meet project needs and tight deadlines.

  • Present and publish results in peer reviewed papers and/or journal articles.

  • Skilled verbal and written communication skills at all levels of the organization.

  • Collaborative skills at all levels of the organization.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

  • Ability to make our laboratory a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and accessible environment where all can thrive.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with CFD modeling of H2 and/or NH3 internal combustion engines.

  • Experience with CONVERGE CFD software.

  • Experience in geometry manipulation with computer-aided design software.
