Under the supervision of the Freight Rate Supervisor and at the direction of the Rail Operations, Supervisor, the Conductor is in charge of the operation of an engine and train crew consisting of the engineer and one or more brakemen.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safety rules are observed as outlined in the General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR).

  • Direct the train crew in the placement of cars, switching and classification of cars, and the safe operation of the engine and its train in the yard.

  • Control movement of engine and train by use of hand signals with full responsibility for determining the next placement of engine and car, coordinating the whole train movement-spotting, re-spotting, and counting activities.

  • Break down train deliveries in yard, regrouping and switching cars to designated locations.

  • Maintain records such as location, time, and number of cars spotted (Conductor's car record book).

  • Supervise the making up of trains, switching, placement, and classification of car and the safe operation of the engine and its train.

  • Instruct engineers and brakemen, as required, in the safety regulations and conveys orders to them on safety.

  • Instruct and inspect personnel on SDDC TEA MI 55-19, Tiedown Instructions for Rail Movements.

  • Serve as alternate Locomotive Engineer and Rough Terrain Container Handler (RTCH) operator as necessary.

  • Perform organizational maintenance on locomotives as directed.

  • Perform preventive maintenance on track switches and grade crossings as required, for example the cleaning of leaves and other debris from switch points, oiling and greasing of switches and removing dirt and gravel from grade crossings.

  • Will be required to work an uncommon tour of duty including nights, weekends, and holidays. As well as working at Fort Sill, will be required to work at remote sites; as an example, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Colorado, Texas, just to name a few.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Graduate or equivalent.

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience as a Conductor.

  • Minimum two (2) years of commercial railroad experience.

  • Minimum three (3) years of government rail crew experience, or locomotive engineer certification preferred.

  • Commercial Drivers License, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to obtain Forklift license for all equipment (4K to 50K)

  • Ability to pass a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) for computer access.

  • Ability to successfully complete the Locomotive Engineer Certification and Recertification course

  • Ability to maintain Locomotive Operator’s license.

  • Ability to complete online Container Inspection for Commercial and Military Intermodal Containers, MIL HDBK 138A.

  • Attendance and award of 88U military occupational specialty preferred.

  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
