Job Description
PURPOSE SUMMARY. Under general supervision of the assigned supervisor, apply knowledge and skills to perform various tasks related to a variety of semi-skilled grounds maintenance work to achieve a pleasant and functional outdoor environment for the Doa Ana County facilities, community centers, parks, volunteer fire departments and fairgrounds.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES.
Perform all grounds maintenance, mow grass, spray and cut weeds, grade property and build walkways; lay sod and perform landscaping including plant, tree, and shrub planting, pruning, watering, trimming, and edging; weeds areas and use spray tools and equipment.
Monitor conditions of grounds and pick up trash on all county-owned or leased properties; remove or paint over graffiti, clean and maintain restrooms.
Empty trash and paint the exterior of buildings, parking lots, and various exterior fixtures; perform clean up prior to and following major events.
Assist in the maintenance and repair of athletic fields (baseball, softball, soccer, etc.) repair bleachers, backstops, fencing, and playground equipment.
Install maintain, and repair sprinkler systems, monitor revolving sprinklers to ensure uniform distribution of water, observe and listen to sprinkler valves to detect malfunctions, and repair or replace parts.
Troubleshoot and repair water lines, booster pumps, valves, heads, and lateral and main lines; install, maintain, and repair drinking fountains.
Perform basic carpentry, plumbing repairs, and basic welding work; handle chemicals and compounds associated with grounds maintenance, i.e. fertilize and apply pesticides to grass, trees, and shrubs.
Purchase various parts and complete work orders regarding activities; maintain and may do minor repairs to motorized equipment.
Periodic safety training will be available to meet OSHA requirements and Doa Ana County policies.
Use County supplied purchase orders to procure hardware and other expendable items.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES. Other duties may be assigned. Shall be required to work weekends, holidays, non-scheduled working hours, flex time upon approval as needed, shift work, and competing demands. As needed, and at the direction of Facilities and Parks Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, may assist in the delivery of sandbags to distribution locations.
QUALIFICATIONS.
A. Education. High school diploma or GED preferred.
B. Experience. One (1) year full-time grounds maintenance experience.
C. Education/Experience substitution. In accordance with County Policy.
D. Licenses/Certifications. Valid unrestricted driver's license. Must maintain a satisfactory driving record in accordance with County policy. Must obtain a Public Pesticide Applicator License in Category 3B for weed control within one (1) year of hire. Welding certificate preferred.
E. Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygr ph, background check, driver's license record, etc.). Background and driver's license record check.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
Must have knowledge of: Various equipment, materials, methods, and practices used in grounds and landscaping maintenance; safe lifting and carrying practices; hazards and safety precautions of the trade to include safe handling and storage practices for a variety of grounds maintenance and landscaping tools and supplies including chemicals, materials, equipment, and machines.
Must have the ability to: Prepare work cost estimates and daily work reports; effectively communicate in oral and written form; follow oral and written instructions and work independently; read service manuals and complete minor repairs using standard methods; establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others and the general public.
Must have skills to: Operate power tools, specialized equipment, power and internal combustion driven equipment, and off-road vehicles; perform manual labor and general welding; operate general tools and equipment related to grounds maintenance.
Compensation Range
$15.00 - $19.05
