Caterpillar Larne is part of Caterpillar’s Electric Power Division. The Larne facility designs and manufactures Cat Power Solutions for key business sectors including data centres, construction, mining, healthcare, utility, and other industries.

The Opportunity

Typically manages a facility with a focus on providing material and/or product for multiple customers. Reporting to the incumbent are managers of various disciplines - Group Managers, Section Managers, Facility Maintenance, Manufacturing Engineering and Quality Functions. This role is responsible for the business P&L working in collaboration with other functions, such as Design Engineering, Project Management, and the newly formed Global Supply Chain Function. The Larne operations report into the Electric Power Global operations and Supply Chain, which encompasses Larne, two facilities in the US as well as the global complimentary supply base. Larne as a site is also the home for several other Caterpillar divisions who reside on the site.

This position is the Face of the Facility, the single point of contact representing the Caterpillar business to local and state authorities, (safety, environmental, zoning, expansion plans and execution). They are responsible for community engagement, promoting the business and involvement in local businesses and charities. They are responsible for the business resumption plan. The incumbent will have cross-functional leadership within the facility and be the final voice in the facility for the decision-making processes.

The Facility Manager position will work in collaboration with business partners such as human resources, labour relations, supply chain, IT, Finance, purchasing and EHS to achieve the business goals.

The position manages a department through subordinate supervisors/managers and professionals and provides direction, focus, motivation, and encouragement for subordinates. The successful candidate will also be responsible for all personnel issues and performance evaluation of subordinates to develop a high performing team and be responsible for driving forward strong change management and developing the behaviours required to be successful.

They will also set priorities and establish a work plan to complete broadly defined assignments and achieve desired results and will impact key quality goals including Customer Satisfaction, Continuous Improvement, Timeliness, Accuracy, Efficiency, Cost Savings, Process Quality, Part Quality, ISO 9000 Certification, etc. The position monitors and reports on key quality measures for the measure(s) stated.

What you will do:

  • Oversee programs and practices for hiring, performance management and developing/training the personnel that perform and support the plant operating functions.

  • Direct all aspects of manufacturing operations for the plant or facility to produce cost-effective, timely and high-quality products in a safe, secure working environment.

  • Manage development, implementation and continual improvement of the operating methods, equipment, systems, and other operating infrastructure used to realize operating goals and objectives.

  • Direct development of production work schedules to meet internal goals and customer expectations; monitoring process and personnel performance of scheduled work activities to remove operating impediments and achieve established operating goals.

• Works with business managers to create appropriate budget amounts.

Quality Management: Knowledge of quality management methods, tools, and techniques and ability to create and support an environment that meets the quality goals of the organization.

• Conducts and directs quality reviews.

• Develops quality assurance processes based on Six Sigma, ISO 9000.

• Develops programs for motivating employees to meet or exceed quality goals.

Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.

• Documents plans with clear objectives, action steps, accountabilities, resource requirements and timelines.

Performance Management: Knowledge of successful performance management techniques; ability to apply organization's performance management system, practices, and tools to developing and improving individual, team, and organizational performance.

Manufacturing Operations: Knowledge of manufacturing operations; ability to perform day-to-day operations of a manufacturing plant or facility for products.

• Builds a monitoring system to track manufacturing operation activities.

• Oversees proper safety and security procedures to ensure accreditation approval.

Manufacturing Safety: Knowledge of manufacturing safety; ability to identify work-related hazards and perform necessary activities to meet regulatory requirements for the safety and protection of workers, environment and site.

Level Extensive Experience:

• Designs and implements emergency response processes and procedures.

• Promotes workplace safety among supervisors and workers; communicates safety rules and regulations.

• Assesses and reports unusual or new safety hazards or violations; initiates corrective action.

• Ensures that all employees and contractors comply with relevant safety policies and regulations.

Manufacturing Standards, Procedures and Policies: Knowledge of organizational standards, procedures and policies in manufacturing activities; ability to plan, guide, and monitor manufacturing processes for compliance.

Level Extensive Experience:

• Consults on development and implementation of cross-functional standards.

• Develops and uses control and monitoring mechanisms for adherence.

• Collaborates with other functions on establishing and documenting joint standards.
