McLaren Health Care Pharmacy Automated System Technician - McLaren Careers in Lapeer, Michigan

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Director of Pharmacy, is responsible for assisting the Pharmacy Informatics Technician with the operation and maintenance of all automated medication dispensing systems, console, and the CII safe. Responsibilities include technical maintenance, required controlled substance monitoring and documentation, record keeping, user privilege, stock maintenance and all other day-to-day automated dispensing systems

maintenance activities.

The technician will assist the Director of Pharmacy in assuring compliance with relevant organizational and regulatory agency standards, policies, procedures, regulations, and requirements.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinates the installation, expansion, repair, and routine maintenance of automated dispensing systems units via relationship with customer support and bio-engineering.

  2. Provides orientation, education, certification, and competency verification of pharmacy and nursing staff using automated dispensing systems and associated documentation.

  3. Works with the Pharmacy Buyers to manage inventories.

  4. Supervises pharmacy technician usage, and refill activities of all automated medication dispensing systems’ stations. Performs basic troubleshooting, discrepancy screening, and all other repetitive system tasks.

  5. Participates on the Diversion Task Force by and assists the Pharmacy Informatics Technician in creating and maintaining computer and paper files, records, reports, and other documentation related to automated medication dispensing systems such as archived data, controlled substance records, and activity reports.

  6. Evaluates and improves automation operations on an ongoing basis.Assists Director of Pharmacy in defining work flow and best practices for all system users.

  7. Participates in receiving, ordering, controlling, and maintaining inventory.

  8. Performs other related responsibilities as necessary.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with science and mathematics emphasis.

  • Experience as a pharmacy technician in a hospital

  • Experience with automated medication dispensing systems for a minimum of three (3) years.

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification

Preferred:

  • Previous experience as a Omnicell® or Pyxis® system administrator

  • Associate Degree.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates proficiency in the use of the automated medication dispensing systems, its reporting functions, and trouble-shooting system failures.

  • Demonstrates ability to train staff on automated medication dispensing system and maintain documentation of training.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of hospital and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines.

  • Complies with departmental and program policies, procedures, and standards.

  • Accurately and efficiently performs relevant pharmaceutical calculations.

  • Correctly dispenses, labels, and packages medications for the age group(s) served.

  • Ensures a pharmacist verifies all medications.

  • Maintains a safe and clean work environment.

  • Completes and maintains accurate, timely documentation related to the work.

  • Demonstrates proficiency with personal computer and departmental software applications.
