Ingham County Human Resources Registered Dietitian – WIC in Lansing, Michigan

Description

Under the supervision of a Program or Clinic Coordinator/Supervisor, conducts nutrition assessments, provides nutrition counseling to eligible community residents, prepares nutrition care plans, and serves as a nutrition resource person for staff.  Teaches group education sessions related to nutrition and makes nutrition related presentations to interested groups in Ingham County.  

Essential Functions

Conducts nutritional assessments and provides nutritional education services to participants of WIC, Ingham Community Health Centers, Maternal Infant Health Program (MIHP), and other public health programs.

May conduct home and hospital visits, providing nutrition counseling to County residents as needed for pregnant and postpartum women and mothers of infants and children. 

 Develops care plans for high risk participants of the eligible clients/patients providing referrals to additional resources when necessary. 

Coordinates with other health professionals involved in client/patient care including physicians' offices to request authorization for special formulas. 

Promotes breastfeeding and assists clients/patients with breastfeeding questions and concerns.   Assesses problems and counsels women in an effort to overcome breastfeeding challenges.   

Teaches group nutrition education sessions.  Develops nutrition lesson plans, nutrition education handouts, pamphlets, and visual aids.  Reviews and updates nutrition education materials for use by the department. 

May serve as part of an interdisciplinary team as the dietitian to prepare and manage team care plans for clients/patients.

May act as a preceptor for, and evaluate the performance of, Dietetic Interns. 

Ensures that clinical documentation regarding clients is kept secure and confidential and maintained consistent with Health Department policies and procedures. 

Participates in workshops, conferences, and other continuing education opportunities to maintain professional status as a Registered Dietitian status. 

May perform the duties of a Nutrition Educator.

Other Functions:  

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Must adhere to departmental standards in regard to HIPAA and other privacy issues.
  • During a public health emergency, the employee may be required to perform duties similar to, but not limited, to those in his/her job description.

Employment Qualifications

*Education: *Possession of Registration as a Dietitian by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

*Experience: *Two years of professional experience as a Registered Dietitian (RD), preferably in a hospital or public health setting.
