Science Systems and Applications, Inc. Optical Communications Senior Systems Engineer in Lanham, Maryland

Science Systems and Applications, Inc (SSAI) has an opening on a fully-funded NASA project for telecommunications engineering support to a NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) project. SSAI is seeking a Systems Engineer (Optical Communications) to support an ongoing effort. This position is on site at NASA's GSFC in Greenbelt, MD.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring proper definition, configuration management, implementation and upgrades, and tracking, of Optical Communication systems and components. Candidate will also be responsible for ensuring necessary activities are being implemented to verify that system integrity is being maintained. Other duties include:

  • Function as an Optical Communications engineer supporting NASA technical leadership at GSFC. Candidate would be responsible for following NASA guidance and providing requirements definition and technical direction for the definition and development of a system or subsystems and coordinating all appropriate engineering activities.

  • Provide advice and support during the entire system life cycle from the specification and analysis of requirements, through the design of the hardware and software, procurement, fabrication, assembly, to integration and test, and launch and operations.

  • Identify and contribute to resolution of technical problems during all phases through coaching and mentoring of the development and maintenance teams.

  • Develop technical reports and documentation.

  • Support technical meetings and reviews.

Required Qualifications:

  • MS in Electrical Engineering, Satellite Communications (RF/Optical), Computer Science, Mathematics, or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited institution, and 6 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience (6+ years) fulfilling the role of Optical Communications Systems engineer.

  • Experience (6+ years) with transition to operation processes, and periodic assessments and maintenance of ground systems for complex systems.

  • Possess working knowledge of mission operations, developing studies, and recommending operational improvements.

  • Extensive experience with ground systems and the systems integration of hardware and software used to evaluate and meet mission requirements.

  • Knowledge of Command and Control Systems in support of real-time operations (command and data connections configuration).

  • US Citizenship required. Must be able to pass a Government background investigation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting NASA missions and centers, and familiarity with NASA systems engineering processes highly desired.

    Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
