Lancaster General Health Supervisor Pharmacy - Sterile Products (Full-time/1.0FTE) in Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Departmental supervisor to provide guidance for USP 797 compliance, medication safety, and supervision of front-line staff members. Primarily day shift hours, with responsibility for monitoring, working with, and development of staff members across sites and shifts. Pharmacy administrator on call week every 6-8 weeks.

Summary

POSITION SUMMARY:

In addition to functioning in a staff pharmacist capacity, this position coordinates and provides leadership for daily activities of staff pharmacists, technicians and clerks in a manner so as to provide efficient pharmacy services. Essentially, this person serves as an expert for logistical and clinical issues related to the delivery of medication from the Pharmacy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

Pharmacy Service Coordination

  • Coordinates the daily activities of pharmacists and technicians, monitors clinical activities and other functions involved in the central pharmacy work area.

  • With guidance from the Pharmacy Director and coordination with department managers, leads ongoing staff projects to improve department performance.

  • Reviews errors and/or discrepancies regarding pharmacist judgment or interpretation of orders. Discusses these problems with individuals involved when necessary.

  • Ensures appropriate communication between shifts is maintained.

  • Monitors work volume, makes adjustments, if needed, or proposes long-term solutions.

  • Implements quality assurance measurements which objectively assess the adequacy of pharmacy services. Performs quality improvement measurements on a regular basis and reports results.

  • Completes routine reports to the Pharmacy Director which summarize activities in the area including:

• problems encountered and their resolution

• achievements

• status report on projects

• evaluation completed

• policy and procedure changes

  • Supervises the compounding and manufacturing of pharmaceuticals including the preparation and labeling of pharmaceuticals in unit of use packaging.

  • Verifies that all products prepared are made according to established standards.

  • Organizes pharmacy area in compliance with all laws and regulations.

  • Communicates and collaborates with physicians, nurses, nurse managers and other health professionals in the delivery of pharmaceutical care to patients.

  • Is responsible for establishing and maintaining quality control procedures.

Personnel Management

  • Supervises the activities of pharmacy technicians and staff pharmacists to ensure their work is done completely.

  • Coordinates staff development by aiding personnel in the identification of individual learning needs, teaching on a one-to-one basis, and planning and implementing in-service topics.

  • Responsible for training and orientation of new pharmacists and technicians with regard to order entry, clinical, patient monitoring, pharmacy automation and quality control activities at WBH.

  • Completes annual performance evaluations accurately and on time and provides ongoing feedback to staff regarding daily activities.

  • Coordinates appropriate disciplinary actions as required.

  • Interviews employee applicants and participates in hiring decisions.

Controlled Substance Management

  • Checks and approves items prepared by pharmacy technicians.

  • Maintains integrity of the C2Safe system and all controlled substances procured, stocked and dispensed in the institution.

  • Maintains integrity of the Anesthesia Kit distribution and recordkeeping procedures associated. Works with Anesthesia leadership to ensure proper documentation and integrity of controlled substances used in that area.

General Management

  • Interacts with pharmacy staff in a constructive & respectful manner. Clearly communicates work expectations & provides appropriate feedback.

  • Resolves work related problems among pharmacy staff members or refer problems to appropriate departmental managers.

  • Ensures compliance with established departmental policies and procedures, State & Federal regulations and standard operating practices.

  • Anticipates changes to patient care standards and implements processes to respond to these changes.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: The following duties are considered secondary to the primary duties listed above:

  • Assists department managers in development of policies and procedures pertinent to the management of pharmacy operations as it pertains to WBH.

  • Scrutinizes and verifies charging and pricing functionality and accuracy. Alerts department managers to discrepancies and/or potential corporate compliance issues.

  • Is familiar with, understands, and complies with all policies and procedures affecting the scope of responsibility as complied in the Department of Pharmacy Policy and Procedures Manual.

  • Observes and reports to department manager unusual situations, occurrences or complaints.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy required.

  • Pennsylvania Registered Pharmacist License or eligible.

  • Four (4) years of pharmacist experience (or three (3) years if a residency is completed); OR completion of a health system pharmacy leadership residency program.

  • Three (3) years understanding of operations outside pharmacy.

  • One (1) year personal computer skills/hospital pharmacy computer system.

  • A health care provider in good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state health insurance programs, i.e. not excluded from participation in Medicare, Medicaid or any other federal or state health insurance program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Pharmacy or PharmD preferred.

  • One (1) year’s experience in managing inventory, packaging, controlled substances or related experience.

  • Three (3) years pharmacy experience.

  • Experience with Cerner PharmNet. Pyxis Connect, Pyxis Rx Profile, C2Safe and Bridge MedPoint.
