As an Engineer at Caterpillar, you will have an opportunity to direct and lead the development of new products and complex components for release to production in a manner that ensures superior performance, durability, reliability, quality and serviceability to the worldwide marketplace.

The successful candidate will have experience in component or system design, genset package/engine application, and/or system integration. Additionally, he or she will have strong people skills for collaborating with process partners and will be interested in actively leading the team to identify and implement innovative solutions for the resolution of issues. Top candidates will have experience in all and/or some of these areas:  engineering and factory systems, Med-V, 3500, and C175 generator sets, demonstrated ability to deliver quality results with a sense of urgency, and experience delivering NPI, CPI, and/or cost reduction projects.

The Packaging team is a cross-platform engineering group that manages products for multiple platforms and market segments. As an Engineering Project Team Leader in the Core Packaging group, you will lead the generator set controls packaging team in the development and maintenance of designs which meet marketing and factory requirements, while also performing as a project leader on component changes to meet technical requirements/specifications. You will manage the planning and execution of project tasks for product introduction on programs that you support, develop and grow your generator set application knowledge and team leadership skills, and broaden your professional network.

This position is for an Engineering Project Team Leader in the Genset Controls Packaging Team. The primary purpose of this role is to provide mentorship and leadership to other engineers within the team and manage the planning and execution of controls packaging development programs and ongoing maintenance initiatives. Keys to success in this role are the ability to manage project plans, effectively communicate with process partners, and escalate issues as needed. You will manage the planning and delivery of projects in alignment with LPSD processes and will continually learn and stay up to date on innovative technologies, mentor and coach team members, and deepen your professional network.

The team leader acts as a spokesperson for the team in meetings with management and with the customer and translates both verbal and non-verbal information from the customer, management, and team members. The team leader must develop a good professional network, which will enable them to obtain the resources and cooperation needed to remove roadblocks so that they can ensure the success of their team. Team leaders must have strong communication skills and interpersonal skills and be able to manage vision and purpose and make effective engineering decisions.

What you will do:

  • Lead the controls packaging team in the design of new products, processes, components, and systems

  • Provide technical leadership to Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing, Marketing, Sales, Service and other departments in the resolution of difficult engineering problems

  • Provide technical guidance on product needs, analysis and validation requirements, and the initiation of new ideas and design concepts

  • Communicate results to global customers, suppliers, team members, and representatives from other business units

  • Complete projects on time and on cost

  • Acknowledge and raise customer’s and management’s awareness of trade-offs between time, resources and quality.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering program or relevant experience

Top Candidates will also have:

  • Good communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills with proven leadership experience

  • Power system design experience

  • Generator set or engine application and controls experience

  • Electrical/electronic aptitude with strong problem-solving skills

  • Experience leading NPI, CPI and Cost Reduction projects with proven results

  • Experience with Caterpillar systems and processes (HVC, EDS, Teamcenter, VisMockup)

  • Prior experience with 3D modeling and/or harness design software

  • Ability to manage multiple programs and break down roadblocks to meet program objectives

Troubleshooting Technical Problems : Extensive Knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing environment.

Product Design and Development : Extensive Knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production.
