Description
A.T. Still University's Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) is seeking a Senior Scientist on the Kirksville, MO campus. The Senior Scientist will advance research activities on a National Institutes of Health-funded project “Autonomic and Nociceptive PASC Syndromes arising from Dysfunctional Autoimmunity” of Principal Investigator (PI) Keith S. Elmslie, PhD, in the ATSU-KCOM Department of Pharmacology.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Be the primary scientist responsible for obtaining electrophysiological data.
Isolate the peripheral neurons and use the patch clamp recording method to investigate isolated stellate ganglia neurons and dorsal root ganglia sensory neurons. The recordings will include action potentials, KV7 current, CaV2.2 current, and NaV1.9 current.
Analyze these data to determine how sera from patients with PASC modulates neuronal activity and the selected ion currents.
Research and Experimentation: Design, plan, and conduct experiments to explore scientific theories and hypotheses. This may involve conducting literature reviews, developing experimental protocols, and analyzing data.
Project Management: Lead and manage research projects from conception to completion. This includes defining project goals, allocating resources, and coordinating team members to ensure timely and successful project execution.
Data Analysis and Interpretation: Analyze experimental data using statistical methods and software tools. Interpret results and draw conclusions based on scientific evidence.
Publication and Presentation: Prepare research findings for publication in scientific journals and present findings at conferences and seminars.
Collaboration and Teamwork: Collaborate with others to achieve research objectives. Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment conducive to innovation and creativity.
Technology and Innovation: Stay abreast of advancements in the field and incorporate new technologies and methodologies into research projects. Identify opportunities for innovation and contribute to the development of new scientific techniques and tools.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that research activities comply with relevant regulatory guidelines and standards, such as good laboratory practices or good clinical practices.
Mentorship and Leadership: Provide guidance and mentorship to student research associates.
Other duties as assigned by Dr. Elmslie.
Requirements
This position requires an experienced PhD patch clamp electrophysiologist, who is expert in recording from isolated peripheral neurons (e.g., rat dorsal root ganglia neurons).
This person must be experienced in recording voltage-dependent potassium (KV) 7, voltage-dependent calcium (CaV) 2.2, and voltage-dependent sodium (NaV) 1.9 currents.
The individual also must have extensive experience isolating peripheral neurons (e.g., rat dorsal root ganglia neurons).
Research Experience: Extensive experience conducting scientific research, preferably in a relevant industry or academic setting. Demonstrated expertise in experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation.
Leadership Skills: Strong leadership and project management skills, with the ability to effectively lead student teams and drive projects to successful completion.
Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential for publishing research findings, presenting at conferences, and collaborating with colleagues.
Analytical Skills: Proficiency in statistical analysis and data visualization tools is highly desirable. Adept at analyzing complex datasets and drawing meaningful conclusions.
Problem-Solving Abilities: A creative and analytical mindset with the ability to identify research challenges and develop innovative solutions to address them.
Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with relevant regulatory requirements and quality standards applicable to the research.
Team Player: Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing among team members.
