Job Summary

Incumbent in this position will provide direct primary health care services service via ambulatory clinic / long term care facility, telehealth, or home visit. Will examine and treat chronic and acute episodic illnesses, minor injuries, accidents, and other injuries/illnesses. Perform selected laboratory testing and interpret results.

Offer referrals to physicians, write prescriptions, and perform office procedures within the scope of expertise and protocols. Incumbent will also work with the physicians in the care and treatment of patients and staff. Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs medical procedures according to privileges issued. Examines and diagnoses health related conditions of individuals presenting themselves for acute outpatient care. Develops appropriate treatment plans, determines when patient referral to secondary / tertiary care or testing is required and assures adequate follow-up of these individuals.

Provides health maintenance visits, evaluates for immunizations and provides anticipatory guidance and referrals; performs physical examinations as DOT, Head Start, employment, etc.; performs STD (sexually transmitted disease) family planning screening and education, physical examinations (pap tests, etc.) and employee wellness screening. Examines staff after on-the-job accidents or injuries. Completes necessary records pertaining to professional activities.

Manage chronic care patients within guidelines of the clinic and with the assistance the physician staff. Consults with other members of the medical staff regarding specific treatments, diagnosis, and other professional matters. Completes necessary records pertaining to professional activities.

Serves on standing committees to review and analyze the clinical functions, and ensure compliance with established clinical, AAAHC accreditation standards, and general professional standards.

Makes clinical presentations at staff meetings as assigned. In conjunction with other medical / pharmacy / dental staff, assist with development of the appropriate formulary for the clinic.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements

  • Knowledge of nursing principles, theories, concepts and techniques;

  • Knowledge of AAAHC Accreditation requirements;

  • Knowledge in the general concepts, principles and practice of Nurse Practitioner;

  • Knowledge of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA);

  • Skill to operate software programs;

  • Skills in conceptual thinking and orderly planning in the diagnosis treatment of patients;

  • Ability to exercise mature judgment in working with patients to allow for good communications and doctor-patient relationships;

  • Ability to use protocols to assess and treat minor illness;

  • Ability to work effectively with physicians, nurses, supervisors, and ancillary staff;

    Physical Activities

Must be able to hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to use hands to finger, handle or operate objects tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; and taste or smell. Each of the listed activities also requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, and stooping, climbing on stools and ladders, and routinely being required to lift, pull, push, and manipulate equipment and patients.

Writing by hand and using a personal computer. Long hours in front of computer screen. Traveling occasionally, to out-of-town meetings and functions.

Working Conditions

The environment involves the usual risks and stress of an office environment within a public service facility. The employee may be exposed to communicable diseases. Safety precautions for employees such as blood drawing for screening of various diseases such as hepatitis, required immunizations, etc. are necessary. The employee is occasionally subject to verbal abuse, threats, and physical violence from angry, hostile, or disgruntled patients and/or family members.

QUALIFICATIONS

Licensure

Employee must have a current, full and unrestricted Registered Nurse and Family Nurse Practitioner license to practice medicine in the State of Alaska. Current DEA, CPR, and ACLS certification required. Must be able to meet and maintain current KICTHC credentialing and privileging requirements.

Possess current valid State of Alaska driver's license with a record acceptable to KIC’s Insurance carrier.

Education

Masters’ degree from an accredited nursing program.

Experience

Two years’ family medicine experience preferred.
