Position Title: Driver/Janitor

Department: The Salvation Army, Divisional Regional Operations Kenai Store, Kenai Corps

Reports To: Thrift Store Manager

FLSA Status: Full-Time / 40 hours per week; Non-Exempt

SCOPE OF POSITION:

This position will be required to work in different locations consisting of the Kenai Store, Soldotna Store, Warehouse, Food Pantry, Church, and will be responsible for driving the vehicles, pick-up/handling of donations, coordination of volunteers, moving and rearranging of sales and storage space, and general maintenance including/but not limited to: snow shoveling/plowing, lawn maintenance, garbage disposal and janitorial duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Able to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent and sometimes continuous basis. This job will require the ability to grasp, push, pull objects and reach overhead.

  • Demonstrates communication and interpersonal skills as well as able to perform basic reading, writing and mathematical skills.

  • Able to work/interact effectively with the public, co-workers, and volunteers.

  • Able to work with little supervision, follow instructions and possess the ability to supervise others.

  • Must maintain a valid Alaska Driver’s License with an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record and be 21 years of age.

  • Must be able to demonstrate the highest level of business and client confidentiality.

  • Must pass all background checks required by The Salvation Army.

  • Must meet all state requirements to be in compliance with DOT and Alaska state rules, which may include obtaining a medical certification from an approved provider.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCITONS:

  • Direct all Store/Food Pantry pick-ups, including, but not limited to, drop boxes, all store properties inside and outside, call in pick-ups loading or unloading commodities, or food bank pick-ups, etc.

  • Supervise any community service workers assigned to you.

  • Handle all donations on behalf of The Salvation Army in a professional and competent manner.

  • Sort incoming donations, moving boxed donations, bailing, loading bailed rags, and general upkeep of warehouse space, other warehouse duties not limited to this one.

  • Operate cash register, help with customers, and do daily cash sheets. (Only when store is understaffed).

  • Direct the maintenance and janitorial upkeep of all Corps properties, through the use of employees, volunteers, and personal duties (examples include perform minor repairs as needed, or direct the contracted repair company in the needed repairs).

  • General upkeep such as snow removal/plowing, sanding, and shoveling of walkways and roofs, mowing of grass, general janitorial, and other similar upkeep needs.

  • Maintain the automobile fleet of the Corps (examples include oil changes, snow tires, replacing windshield wipers, send to mechanic shop for repairs when needed, fueling, and ensure cleanliness of vehicle for staff use)

  • Assist Corps Officer in other Corps business as needed.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

DRIVER REQUIREMENTS:

Must be an unrestricted licensed driver. Must complete and pass The Salvation Army Driver Safety Course. Current Driver’s license required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The driver will be working in a variety of locations including heated warehouse, heated store, heated vehicle, unheated warehouse, outside, and at the dump site. Hearing protection may be worn when working around operating machinery.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Speaking, sitting, bending, walking, pushing, pulling, standing, kneeling, stooping, reaching, handling, fingering, climbing, and balancing. Hearing and visual acuity must be within normal limits. Lifting and moving objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Ability to learn and adhere to proper lifting techniques, always wearing a back brace when lifting heavy items. Maintain the ability to operate a computer, telephone, and similar technologies. Driving a motor vehicle.

Software-related Skills:

Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook familiarity preferred. Working knowledge of integrated database applications and ability to use new software programs with basic training.

Language Skills:

Must be able to understand, follow and give both written and oral instructions and be comfortable working with diverse individuals in face-to-face contact and over the telephone. The employee must be able to use speech and hearing for ordinary and telephone conversation.

Mathematical Skills:

Must be able to perform simple calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and apply concepts such as ratios and percentages in practical situations.

Performance Skills:

Must be punctual, organized, self-motivated, flexible, and possess a desire to learn and assist those he/she interacts with.

Protect the Mission:

Must complete the online course for this area and pass the Background Checks required by The Salvation Army for employment.
