Overview The responsibilities of the coordinator are expected to evolve over time as the programs develop and department or stakeholder needs evolve, but initial responsibilities include managing the Utah Water Watch program and Utah Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Squad with approximately 100 volunteers monitoring water quality throughout the State, and assist in managing the Pack It Out Utah and Gotta Go initiatives. This position will be housed at Wetland Discovery Point in Kaysville, UT with occasional travel throughout Utah. This position reports directly to the Water Quality Extension faculty housed in Kaysville.

Responsibilities The primary role will be to coordinate Utah Water Watch (UWW) and the Utah Harmful Algal Bloom Squad including:

  • Recruit volunteers from across the state; network with individuals and organizations to create relationships that help connect and locate potential volunteers.
  • Educate/train volunteers about watershed science, the public science programs, and how to use appropriate equipment to conduct monitoring.
  • Maintain database and volunteer/monitoring site information.
  • Mail and track volunteer supplies.
  • Respond to, send, and track emails and monthly reminders with volunteers and partners.
  • Use social media to promote water quality knowledge and interest in UWW.
  • Support volunteers by meeting their needs. Encourage and engage them in meaningful ways that creates a desire for continued long-term participation.
  • Identify and reevaluate proper monitoring equipment and methodologies that are appropriate for volunteers to use for collecting water quality data.
  • Help design educational handouts, lessons, and videos about water issues and how to conduct monitoring as needed.
  • Coordinate with data users and partners (UDWQ, researchers, scientists, and other water managers) to help fill data gaps by volunteer monitoring.
  • Assist in cleanup and upkeep of Wetland Discovery Point Center in Kaysville.
  • Complete other duties as assigned. Secondary roles includes:

  • Host cleanup event at Wetland Discovery Point (variable locations) during "Pack It Out Week" and as needed through the year.

  • Coordinate outreach with statewide partners about statewide events.
  • Use social media to promote Pack It Out and all corresponding statewide events.
  • Assist Extension Water Quality faculty member in maintaining Gotta Go Utah, an initiative that teaches proper bathroom etiquette while recreating outdoors, includes helping:

  • Maintain Gotta Go website and social media accounts.

  • Assist in creating new content and updating current resources

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earned bachelors degree in a field related to natural resource management, volunteer and/or program management, or water quality. Preferred Experience:
