Burns & McDonnell Section Manager - Program Management (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri

Description This position is responsible for the direction, mentorship, development, and leadership of Program Managers, Project Managers in Training (PMIT), Assistant Project Managers (APM)of the Kansas City Transmission & Distribution (KCM T&D) program management organization and will report directly to the KCM T&D Managing Director of Program Management. With the KCM T&D program management team continuing to expand across numerous program offices, increased leadership amongst the program management team will be critical for the sustained growth and development of the team.

Interested candidates will be required to provide their recommendations on organizing the existing and future program management team in a way to maximize the benefits of team member development and mentoring.The reporting structure should also consider the career paths of the team members, existing levels, and reporting locations.This new section manager position would have between ten (10) and fifteen (15) direct reports.

Travel is expected and may include trips to visit staff and help grow the program management organization across North America. Candidates will be expected to be at least 60% billable, while the remaining time is expected to be non-billable to take on the responsibilities of this position.

Responsibilities of this position will be to continue growing the program management team in a dynamic and profitable manner based upon Burns & McDonnell's core values of client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, safety, and overall outstanding service in unison with the KCM T&D leadership including the Managing Director of Program Management.Specific areas of responsibility of this Section Manager position include the following, with other duties assigned by Managing Director of Program Management:

  • Advocate safety in the department.

  • Support diversity initiatives.

  • Provide technical mentorship to direct reports to ensure they can effectively perform their job duties in a high-quality manner.

  • In coordination with the Managing Director of Program Management and other Program Managers, strategically evaluate work assignments, training, and performance to ensure their direct reporting staff are appropriately utilized and that their staff is in an environment that will allow them to grow and develop.

  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight and judgment in anticipating and solving staffing and technical problems.

  • Provide leadership, including technical mentorship and development of their direct reporting staff, including guidance on the following:

  • Project management skill sets (scope, budget, cost, risk management and scheduling)

  • Stakeholder management

  • Client management

  • Internal BMcD financials

  • Support PMIT Training

  • Coordinate new hire onboarding and new hire training curriculum with the Director of Program Management and/or other Program Managers.

  • Coordinate with KCM T&D leadership and the Managing Director of Program Management to communicate current performance status, resolve group challenges, and identify future needs.

  • Monitor progress on staff assignments and provide input into areas of concern and direction or redirection to enhance the achievement of project key performance indicators.

  • In coordination with KCM T&D leadership, including the Managing Director of Program Management, evaluate and assess candidates to hire as high-performing employee owners while maintaining focus on the retention of current staff.

  • Ensure corporate and T&D quality initiatives are implemented.

  • Advance and develop program and project management tools and workflows to increase the efficiency of tasks and responsibilities.

  • Coordinate with the Managing Director of Program Management on staff work assignments.

  • Meet with staff monthly, at a minimum, to discuss real-time performance driving continuous improvement and complete performance appraisal process for staff.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering or related technical field from an accredited program. Minimum five years related professional experience in program/project management of T&D programs. Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients. Position requires the ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully and positively. Must possess strong technical skills, strong analytical skills, and a have a positive strategic perspective.Project Management Professional (PMP) or Program Management Professional (PgMP) certification is preferred but is not required.
