Description and Requirements
Job Responsibilities (Essential functions and duties):
Communicate effectively with business leadership on IP strategy, patent filing plan, and IP awareness and education.
Manage a global patent portfolio for the PCSD businesses including harvest and identify patentable innovations, manage outside counsel to draft, and file patent applications including prosecution, reexamination, invalidation, and other patent related professional work in the lifecycle.
Provide inventor training and education to innovation communities.
Support, as appropriate, patent licensing opportunities, litigations, and complex business transactions with patent portfolio analysis, due diligence, infringement, and invalidity analysis, and claim charting and testing.
Manage relationships and communications with outside counsel.
Support other business IP related activities.
Job Requirements – Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Competencies (KSAC’s):
Strong experience in managing a global patent portfolio, including brainstorming, harvesting, filing, prosecution and strategic placement of secondary filings in support of global business strategies.
In-depth understanding of JP patent law, filing and prosecution strategies. It is preferable to have familiarity with global patent laws including US, Europe, WIPO and China.
Strong technical skills to partner with business leadership and Patent Review Board technologists.
Understanding of technology of PC business clients (both hardware and software knowledge).
Fulfill independently tasks of high complexity in patent related matters for the business clients and provide patent related counseling.
Top notch communication skills to communicate with business clients and identify patents for protection, improve IP awareness in business clients through education and training.
Intense commitment to high moral standards and business ethics.
Personable collaborator who can work successfully and build relationships with internal stakeholders and external parties to achieve business goals.
Strong ability to identify challenges and develop and adapt to changes to achieve business and corporate goals.
Strategic thinker with a broad perspective, and an analytical thinker with enough creativity to synthesize new solutions to old problems.
Experience working with IP tools, both internal and external.
Excellent English and Japanese language skills, both written and verbal.
Job Requirements – Prior work experience
- 10+ years’ experience with strong patent portfolio strategy and development experience, preferably in patent department of a global ICT (Information and Communications Technology) company or an international patent law firm. Patent Agent status with the JPO or similar status for other key countries.
Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in science and technology, preferably majoring in Physics, Electronics, Computer Science or Communication. A Master’s degree in one of these areas is preferred.
