City of Kalamazoo Traffic Engineer in Kalamazoo, Michigan
Description/Distinguishing Features
The Traffic Engineer* *is responsible for providing safe, rapid, comfortable, efficient, convenient and environmentally compatible movement of people, goods and services for the City.

- Manages, directs and approves projects and contracts related to the installation of traffic control devices (signs, pavement markings, signals).
- Plans, organizes, coordinates and manages long and short range planning of traffic projects, goals, and capital improvements.
- Manages all investigations of traffic conditions, presents information to the public, and supervises a variety of reports.
- Cooperates with the Traffic Board and other municipal and state officials taking part in discussions, meetings, and studies related to projects with impacts to traffic flow, safety, or traffic control devices.
- Manages budget items including traffic signal projects, pavement markings and traffic control.
- Manages the street lighting and cooperates with Consumers Energy to maintain and operate a reliable and appropriate street lighting system.
- Supervises and evaluates staff including the delegation of work, performance reviews, training and development, and discipline in accordance with City policies, procedures and union contracts.
Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering required.
- Minimum of two (2) years of traffic / transportation engineering related experience.
- Valid State of Michigan driver's license required.
- Professional Engineer's license preferred.
- Strong, clear communicator and excellent interpersonal skills; proven ability to effectively and positively communicate with all levels within the organization.
- Demonstrates a sense of urgency, prioritizes well, shows energy, responds to opportunities, instills urgency in others, and meets deadlines.
- Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office applications; strong MS Excel skills.
Acceptable Training and Experience
- Frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate equipment and reach with hands and arms.
- Occasionally required to lift, move, carry, pull and push files/objects up to 10 pounds while sitting, standing, climbing or walking.
- Required to regularly talk and hear.
- Required to occasionally stand and walk.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Regularly speaks clearly, using the English language.
