Zoetis Inc Senior Associate Scientist / Scientist Protein Bi in Kalamazoo, Michigan

Role Description

Zoetis is seeking a talented and experienced protein biochemist/formulation scientist to assist at the bench with protein purification, analytical and biophysical characterization of proteins, and discovery formulations. They will contribute to research objectives in Bioprocess and Product Sciences at Zoetis. This scientist would perform day-to-day protein biochemistry activities including protein purification, analytical characterization, buffer preparation, protein quantitation, sterile filtration, formulation and final vialing for studies. A successful candidate would have knowledge of antibodies and/or protein interactions and the biochemical properties therein along with an understanding of enabling protein formulations, and factors effecting protein stability. Self-motivation, excellent communication, attention to detail, organizational and problem-solving skills, and an ability to work independently are essential.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: Protein purification (mAbs, therapeutic proteins, reagent proteins) by affinity or native methods Use and trouble shoot the Tecan robot for high-throughput purification of proteins Buffer exchange of proteins by various techniques (dialysis, UF/DF) Quantitate proteins by UV and BCA assay Analytical characterization of proteins by SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, analytical SEC and CGE Biophysical assessments of proteins to acquire melting and aggregation temperatures of therapeutic proteins in addition to DLS data (Panta and UNcle instrumentation, or related) Perform enabling protein formulation activities including buffer exchange, dilutions, and formulation of drug substance study materials Perform formulation screening methods including freeze thaw cycling, agitation stress, and thermal stress techniques Vialing of proteins for studies, coordination of sterility testing and shipment of test articles Maintain, in an organized manner, schedules for stability testing of proteins and ensure testing is performed and well documented Coordinate with personal outside of line for shipments of material to study locations, including all the necessary paperwork required Maintain electronic laboratory notebooks, prepare precise technical report summaries, analysis and maintain appropriate documentation Self-motivation, excellent communication, attention to detail, organizational and problem-solving skills, and an ability to work independently are essential

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Educational background: Bachelor's degree/MS or equivalent in scientific discipline with emphasis in biochemistry, analytical chemistry, or related disciplines with 1-3 years of hands-on experience Training and experience with protein purification techniques and instrumentation a plus (Protein A Chromatography, IMAC, AKTA Unicorn suite, Tecan) Working knowledge of and/or skills in protein characterization (SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, SEC, CGE, protein quantitation) Knowledge of biophysical techniques: NanoDSF and DLS and related instrumentation and software a plus (Prometheus Panta and Unchained UNcle) Ability to perform basic dilution and stoichiometric calculations, along with preparation of buffers at various scales. Understanding of protein enabling formulations and basic formulation screening methods. Work in formulation sciences a plus Knowledge of antibody structure and the biochemical properties involved in protein interactions along with the ability to think critically and relate assay results to protein properties Ability to work independently, with ambiguity, and as part of a team, self-motivation, adaptability, and a positive attitude Attention to detail, excellent organizational skills and good oral and written communication skills required Computer skills required: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Geneious Prime or equivalent
