Kalamazoo County Government Epidemiologist in Kalamazoo, Michigan

GENERAL SUMMARY

The purpose of this job is to manage the public health disease surveillance system and regularly analyze and report on the health status of residents. Identifies problems and recommends corrective actions. Construct relevant databases and perform data analysis for periodic reporting. Participates in consultation meetings with internal and external communities to consolidate recommendations and disseminate policy options.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises the work of occasional personnel (interns, students, or volunteers), including assigning and reviewing work and providing project guidance.
  • Develops custom databases to monitor and analyze community health data to help identify, predict, and respond to health-based disparities.
  • Prepares reports and presentations to educate, inform, and promote action from department leadership.
  • Facilitates meetings with department staff, community members, and other external stakeholders to discuss and address public health concerns.
  • Provides input to secure funding to support public health initiatives.
  • Recommends short- and long-term goals and objectives to improve County disease surveillance systems and resources.
  • Assists in agency response to public health emergencies.
  • Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate degree from an accredited college or university in Epidemiology or a related field.
  • 3 to 5 years of related work experience in public health, communicable diseases, social epidemiology, and data analysis.
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
