City of Kalamazoo Environmental Services Technician II in Kalamazoo, Michigan

Description/Distinguishing Features

Under general supervision, participates in the sampling and analysis of drinking water and wastewater samples in the field and in the Public Services Laboratory; performs related duties as assigned.   *DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  *This is technical work that will primarily have an emphasis on either field sampling and testing or laboratory testing. Features may include field sampling as well as field and laboratory testing (physical, chemical, biological and bacteriological) required for regulatory compliance, in-house monitoring and industrial billing. The employee in this class works under the direction of the Public Services Programs Manager.

Examples of Duties
  • Conducts field sampling and measurements for drinking water and/or wastewater according to EGLE/EPA regulations and guidelines.
  • Prepares samples prior to actual analysis according to established procedures;
  • Performs routine wet-bench chemical and bacteriological analysis of water and wastewater;
  • Performs instrumental analysis of water and wastewater under direction of the Public Services Programs Manager and Laboratory Supervisor;
  • Prepares reports of laboratory data on a daily and weekly basis.
  • Maintains laboratory cleanliness and order;
  • Prepares reagents and standards for chemical test work.
Essential Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of routine analytical chemistry as it applies to drinking water and wastewater measurements;
  • Good knowledge of drinking water and/or wastewater treatment processes as they relate to laboratory activities;
  • Working skill in maintaining accurate records and preparing technical reports;
  • Ability to lift 100 lb. sampling equipment with assistance and carry 40 lb. sample containers up and downstairs;
  • Ability to collect samples and maintaining equipment.
Acceptable Training and Experience

A minimum of two years of college coursework in chemistry, biology or environmental studies, including related laboratory training, or completion of the core curriculum for a Baccalaureate level minor in chemistry, biology, or a related field, plus some experience as a laboratory technician, field sampler or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the essential knowledge and skills.
