Kalamazoo County Government Collections Specialist in Kalamazoo, Michigan

GENERAL SUMMARY

The purpose of this job is to determine the appropriate course of action to facilitate payment of court amounts due, issuing billing statements, and initiating involuntary garnishments. Ensures that court fines are enforced and collected by reviewing cases. Provides recommendations to resolve collection issues, review and establish payment plans, monitors methods of payment, and communicates with defendants and other interested parties. Answers phone calls to discuss past due notices, payment plans, restitution checks, court orders, tax garnishments and related correspondence.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reviews and monitors felony cases to ensure collection of court fines and fees in accordance with court judgements.
  • Conducts financial show cause hearings to discuss collection methods with defendants without appearing on record.
  • Prepares and schedules show cause orders, financial bench warrants, and arraignments for failures to appear or payment.
  • Generates, reviews, approves, and processes payment plans, taxes, wage garnishments, and community service reports.
  • Appears on record, offering collection recommendations to resolve outstanding debts.
  • Processes prison remit forms, bonds, and restitution.
  • Distributes monthly restitution checks, daily cash-outs for clerks, and coverage of balancing witness fee bags.
  • Reconciles court accounts and invoices with state agencies; produces appropriate monthly and yearly reporting.
  • Prepares yearly income tax garnishments.
  • Coordinates directly with defendants via phone, mail, or other channels to collect outstanding debts.
  • Processes returned mail, including opening tracing investigations to locate valid contact information for defendants.
  • Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience

  • At least two years of relevant college-level course work or an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Criminal Justice, Pre-Law, Finance, or a related field
  • 1 to 3 years of related work experience, such as Paralegal or Court Clerk, courts, legal or accounting
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities
