Description of Work

This posting is for an Engineering Technician III in the Johnston County Maintenance Office.The Engineering Technician III will oversee and manage inspections of contracted and force account activities for Highway Maintenance Operations in Johnston County. Those operations include the inspection of the following, but are not limited to ditch maintenance, shoulder maintenance, pavement maintenance, driveway, encroachments, erosion control and environmental documentation, design and inspection of erosion control measures, obtaining field data and permit documentation for maintenance pipe replacements, administer storm water pollution prevention plan for maintenance facility and material storage yards. This position will assist the Engineer with obtaining field data, record keeping of highway maintenance operations, and directly oversee the Technicians charged with inspecting and managing those operations in the field on a day-to-day basis. This position will also assist with the management and direction of emergency response during inclement weather operations and disaster response. This position is subject to emergency callbacks including highway emergencies, snow and ice removal, natural disasters and other severe weather events. Safety toe shoe footwear required. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.

  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups.

  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.

  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments.

  • Computer experience including office software and drafting software.

    Additional Expectations:

Position will be expected to obtain and hold various certifications including but not limited to NCDOT QMS Roadway technician and NCDOT Erosion Control Level II: Site Manager. Position will be expected to have knowledge and skill in using office computer software. Must have the ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards including highway traffic, extreme weather, and traversing rough terrain. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
