**[General Statement of Duties:[ Performs entry-level semiskilled work operating a transit vehicle, collecting fares, and overseeing the safety of passengers; does related work as required.

**[Distinguishing Features of the Class: [An employee in this class operates a city passenger bus following a specific schedule and route as a relief or temporary driver. An employee in this class is under the direct supervision of a trainer and/or transit supervisor. An operator is responsible for obtaining and filling out vehicle maintenance requests/needs and making daily reports of distances traveled, passengers carried and fares collected. The work is also reviewed through the safe and satisfactory operation of the vehicle and is performed on a shift basis. The work involves driving one type of service daily.

• check lights, brakes, steering, tires, radiator and oil level prior to leaving garage;
• drives City bus on a special route as a relief or temporary driver, picking up and discharging passengers at designated locations according to schedule;
• safe operation of a wheelchair lift;
• collects fares, transfers or tokens from each passenger, makes change and issues transfers;
• obtains necessary repairs and maintenance work for vehicles;
• makes required reports of passengers transported daily, number of miles bus traveled, amount of gasoline and oil used, and any unusual happenings;
• reports all accidents involving bus or passengers immediately to the Police Department;
• refers passengers questions pertaining to transit routes to a supervisor or team leader (Operator III);
• keeps bus clean by removing litter between trips;
• performs related tasks as required.
