JOB REQUIREMENTS: Overview Performs preparation and microscopic examinations of cytology specimens. Work at other Mercy facilities performing the same functions, as required. Work alternate shifts, weekends and holidays as needed to adequately provide services. Perform other duties and projects as assigned. Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities Utilize the Information System to receive samples, order tests, answer questions from nurses and physicians, document quality control activities and produce reports required to perform job tasks. Confirms accuracy of patient sample identification prior to performing processes; evaluates specimen quality and identifies when unacceptable. Documents information concerning quality of specimen. Performs microscopic examinations of gyn and non-gyn cytology specimens. Screens cytological specimens for abnormalities and determines when additional review by a pathologist is necessary. Enters interpretation of each case screened into LIS. Determines when additional slides and/or cell blocks need to be processed. Assists radiologist in FNA specimen collection as necessary; Assists pathologist in staining of FNA slides and assessment of adequacy. Performs duties of cytology assistant as needed including preparation and staining of gyn and non-gyn specimens. Performs quality control procedures for all reagents, methods and instruments according to policy and regulatory requirements; documents activities according to policy. Oversees quality assurance program; assures reagents, stains and chemicals are correctly labeled (ex: receive date, expiration date, etc.). Maintains filing system and records for slides. Performs daily preventative maintenance of equipment. Coordinates workflow with team members to accomplish a workload within designated turnaround-time. Prioritizes the processing of Non-GYN, FNA, sendouts, and GYN specimens to facilitate timely completions and reporting. Performs laboratory test procedures using a variety of methods; confers with physicians, nurses, support staff, and outside customers regarding clarification of specimen collection requirements, and sample handling. Includes responding to telephone inquiries. Selects and/or reviews quality assurance selected cases and additional high risk cases. Prepares chemical reagents and stains required for testing. Routes shared specimen samples to additional area as necessary for timely completion of all testing. Checks supplies, documenting per department policy and reviewing expiration dates, storage temperature conditions, stock rotation, and taking corrective action when necessary. Maintains working inventory of consumables, reagents, and supplies. Participates in continuing education activities throughout the year. Successfully completes proficiency testing program...
