Job Description

The Sport and Entertainment Office is actively seeking a Marketing Specialist.

This is professional marketing work in planning, researching, developing, producing, writing, and presenting promotional, educational, instructional, and informational events and programs. The work requires a basic understanding and application of digital marketing, content creation, graphic design, marketing, principles, event promotion and practices in public relations, advertising, social media, and journalism, and usually gained through degree granting schools, or an equivalent level of practical knowledge gained through experience. May assign, monitor, and review the work of others. Contacts with others require skills in understanding people, sensitivity to others' point of view, persuasiveness and/or assertiveness, and are often required to influence behavior, change an opinion, or turn a situation around to achieve project objectives. The work is standardized in that tasks are covered by substantially diversified procedures and specialized standards, and because of the changing priorities, or different situations, incumbents have the latitude to consider which of the many procedures or standards should be followed and in what sequence. The work is primarily performed in an office and occasionally in a field environment, but the risks and hazards are minimal, known, predictable, and controllable. Operates a motor vehicle and standard office equipment such as personal computer. The physical demands include moderate physical activity in demonstrating techniques and occasionally lifting supplies up to 20 pounds. Work is performed under limited supervision where the work assignments are subject to established procedures, practices, precedents, methods, techniques, standards and/or well-defined policies, and the worker plans and organizes the work, determines their own priorities, and the work is reviewed, usually after the fact, in terms of quality, volume, timeliness, and for adherence to established methods, standards and policies.

Examples of Work

  • Plans, researches, develops, markets, produces, presents, and writes promotional, educational, instructional, and informational material regarding department or division events and programs.

  • Researches, conducts interviews, develops, prepares, writes, and edits publications, booklets, newsletters, news releases, magazine and news articles, public service announcements, video, and slide show scripts, plays, flyers, displays, and correspondence.

  • Formulates media campaign’s goals and objectives and evaluates effectiveness through continuous analysis of program content, presentation, and achievements.

  • Makes formal and informal presentations to public and private sector organizations, media representatives, and public officials.

  • Updates social media platforms to reach targets and develop metrics.

  • Responds to routine informational inquiries from media representatives, public officials, sponsoring companies, advertising agencies, and the public regarding assigned unit's operations, programs, policies, purpose, and areas of responsibility.

  • Plans, designs, coordinates, and conduct instructional and educational seminars and workshops.

  • Designs marketing materials, flyers, banner, event signage and promotional merchandise, ensuring consistency across all visual assets.

  • Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • May assign, monitor, and review, the work of others.

  • Operates a motor vehicle.

  • Operates standard office equipment such as personal computers using word processing, spreadsheet, database, design, and other related software.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville’s competencies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of marketing theories, principles, and practices in public relations, advertising, social media and journalism.

  • Knowledge of and familiarity with Jacksonville’s major events (Jacksonville Jazz Festival, Florida Georgia game, Sea & Sky Air Show, World of Nations) is a plus

  • Knowledge of techniques and methods used in promotional, educational, instructional, and informational program development, design, production, presentation, and administration.

  • Knowledge of social media platforms, analytics tools digital marketing trends, and innovations in reaching targets and developing metrics.

  • Knowledge in developing media plans (planning and buying) and presenting analytical data.

  • Knowledge of assigned unit's operations, programs, policies, purpose, and areas of responsibility.

  • Knowledge of graphic arts, artwork, audio-visuals, and other materials used in public relations work.

  • Knowledge of adult learning, program evaluation, and needs assessment processes and teaching and training methods.

  • Ability to prepare, write, and/or edit publications, booklets, newsletters, news releases, magazine and news articles, public service announcements, video, and slide show scripts, plays, flyers, displays, correspondence, and related materials.

Open Requirements/Supplemental Information

  • Five years of education and/or professional experience in media relations, communications, journalism, advertising, marketing, social media, education, training, or related field

  • Which included such duties as promotional, educational, instructional, and/or informational program development, design, and administration; and preparation and presentation of speeches, news releases, and/or public service announcements.

  • Experience working in an advertising/public relations environment preferred. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), Canva and video editing, preferred

  • The probationary period for this classification is (6) months.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:

  • A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
