Job Description:

The police officer provides basic law enforcement services to the community within the mission, goals, and objectives of the agency, and in compliance with governing federal, state, and local laws.

The police officer patrols roads of and adjoining the College, responds to calls for assistance, enforces laws to provide for public safety, and protects the life and property of College and its Community. The police officer performs a variety of public safety tasks in the performance of law enforcement activities.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF THE FUNCTION:

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be twenty-one (21) years of age or older

  • Be a citizen of the United States

  • Free from convictions of a criminal offense for which more than one (1) year in prison can be imposed

  • Possess a good work history

  • Display a history of showing respect for the law and the rights of others

  • Free from addictive or excessive use of either alcohol or drugs

  • Free from the use of illegal controlled substances

  • Free from any debilitating conditions which may affect the ability to perform as police officer

  • Free from any other significant physical limitations or disabilities which would, in a physician's opinion, impair the applicant's ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of a police officer or complete the required minimum training requirements.

  • Be psychologically capable of exercising appropriate judgment or restraint in performing the essential duties and responsibilities of a police officer.

  • Be subjected to a thorough background investigation which will include, but not be limited to criminal history check, personal interviews, interviews of the applicant's previous employers, check of driving record verifying that the applicant has a valid driver's license, and a determination that the applicant is free from a history of infamous or disgraceful conduct.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or GED

Law Enforcement Academy training

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.

  1. Patrols campus to enforce laws and regulations.

  2. Regulates campus traffic.

  3. Assists with emergency service and provides emergency first aid treatment. 4. Provides security for special events.

  4. Provides information to the College community and general public.

  5. Makes arrests, completes incident reports, and prepares criminal cases and presents testimony in court.

  6. Conducts crime prevention programs.

Physical:

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in a law enforcement setting; an office setting; outdoors; restrain or subdue individuals; walk, stand, sit, or run for prolonged periods of time; occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; occasionally climb and balance; regularly push, pull, lift, and/or carry light to moderate weights; frequently lift and/or move moderate to heavy weights; occasionally lift and/or move heavy weights.

Operate office equipment including use of computer keyboard; requires a sense of touch, finger dexterity, and gripping with hands and fingers; ability to speak and hear to exchange information.

Ability to operate a vehicle to travel to various locations and to operate and use specialized law enforcement tools and equipment including guns and handcuffs; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision:

See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing:

Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts, in high/precarious places, with firearms and explosives, and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibrations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
