Wildlife Health Technician III - CVM

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) seeks a Wildlife Health Technician to join a highly collaborative team of wildlife specialists, veterinary researchers, wildlife statisticians and modelers, communications professionals, and data analysts to support the wildlife health research and management aims of the Lab. Primary responsibilities include sample processing in the molecular laboratory, data analysis, and archiving for wildlife and wildlife pathogen samples. Additional responsibilities include molecular laboratory inventory management, field collection of wildlife and wildlife pathogen samples, tissue sample collection support, and other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• Associate's degree in a life science field with up to 2 years of relevant laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Working knowledge of molecular techniques.
• Must be able to foster and maintain effective, collaborative relationships; works well both independently and within a team.
• Proficiency with a variety of basic software systems with the ability to learn new applications quickly.
• Ability to perform laboratory procedures and record keeping with accuracy, precision, and efficiency.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Experience adhering to established procedures, including but not limited to safety standards.
• Must maintain a valid driver's license and be willing to travel.
• Ability to push, pull, lift, or carry up to 50 pounds.

Employees working in the laboratory must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in molecular biology or genetics.
• Proven experience performing data analysis and interpretation of molecular biology and DNA sequencing data using reproducible methods (e.g. R, Linux).
• Experience working in research or methods development.
• Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

Important Details about the Position

• This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
• This is a full-time one-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
• We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
• Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

While the regular business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks.

The Cornell Wildlife Health Lab (CWHL) is a partnership between the AHDC and the New York State Department of Environmental Conversation to provide surveillance, diagnosis, and management support for wildlife diseases. The CWHL provides comprehensive, science-based communications on wildlife health and conservation.
