Temporary Greenhouse Worker

Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences

Ithaca, New York

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University's second-largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical, and economic well-being.

The Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station links Cornell's world-class research farms and plant growth facilities with one of the nation's most comprehensive statewide cooperative extension systems. Through this engaged, interactive system, we address pressing issues that directly affect the health and welfare of the state and beyond.

We are seeking a temporary greenhouse worker to support the teaching and research projects across five greenhouse facilities on the Ithaca Campus. Specific expectations are as follows:

  • Greenhouse watering and fertilizing.
  • Maintaining greenhouses and work areas in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition, including cleaning and sterilizing pots, trays, tools, greenhouse equipment, greenhouse floors/benches and drains, and work areas.
  • Soil mixing
  • Inventorying and disposing of old greenhouse equipment onsite and at storage facilities.
  • Working in a professional manner with a regular Greenhouse Grower during designated work shifts.

We need a temporary employee who can work:

  • Wednesday through Sunday or Saturday through Wed (8:00 AM - 4:30 PM).
  • Most holidays.

This is a full-time (39 hours/week), benefits eligible, six-month appointment. This position is located in Ithaca, New York. Work is onsite and remote work is not available.

Required Qualifications:

This is a very physical job: you must have the ability to twist, bend, stand for long durations of time on a concrete surface, reach, climb and lift awkward loads, and work from a ladder as part of daily work activities. Other requirements include:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Punctual attendance is a must.
  • Good communication skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of computer applications such as Excel, Word, and Outlook/Exchange.
  • Physical stamina, manual dexterity, and ability to tolerate the greenhouse environment (e.g., high and low-temperature conditions).
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work well with employees, faculty, supervisors, and other research and extension personnel in a professional, respectful environment.
  • Safety oriented; know, understand, and adhere to all proper safety requirements and regulations.
  • Ability to learn watering techniques in a research environment and become proficient within two (2) weeks or less.
  • Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position and have reliable transportation as well as have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver's license.
  • Must be willing to work holidays and weekends.
  • Willing to work in an environment where pesticides are applied by others.

Preferred Qualifications:
