Postdoctoral Associate- Viral vaccine development

We are seeking highly motivated scientists to join the Diel Lab in the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, Cornell University, as Post-doctoral Associate, working on projects focusing on characterizing viral immune responses, identifying, and characterizing protective viral antigens for subunit vaccine development. The Diel Lab has a diverse research portfolio with projects currently funded by USDA, APHIS, NPB and NIH (https://diellab.net/). The lab studies mechanisms underlying virus-host interactions, pathogenesis, immunity, and works on diagnostic assay development for emerging viral diseases at the human/animal interface.


This position will work primarily on the development of viral vaccines and development of novel vectored or nucleic acid-based platforms for vaccine development. This will involve design, construction, and characterization of recombinant viral vectors and their characterization in vitro and in vivo in immunogenicity/challenge studies in animal models. The candidate will help in the design, and will coordinate, and perform animal immunization challenge studies under BSL-2 and BSL-3 conditions and prepare manuscripts for high impact scientific journals.


The applicant should have a PhD in virology, possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, have a team oriented and collaborative mindset and have a strong desire to develop a career in the field of virology and viral pathogenesis. Prior training with flow cytometry, reverse genetics, antigen design and characterization and experience with laboratory or large animal models are assets.


This is a one-year full-time appointment with the potential for extension contingent upon successful performance.


The salary range for this position is $61,008 to $72,000, depending on qualifications and experience.

Pay Range:

$61,008.00 - $87,000.00

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.

  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.

  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)

  • Unique applicable skills.
