Licensed Veterinary Technician II - Research Technician

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) seeks an enthusiastic Research Technician to join the Small Animal Community Practice (SACP) team. This position has two roles, as a research support specialist and as a licensed veterinary technician. These are intended to be complementary since the position will support clinical and translational research projects with relevance to veterinary general practice.


The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage multiple datasets for antimicrobial resistance projects
  • Conduct quantitative or qualitative analyses on antimicrobial resistance or antimicrobial stewardship as assigned
  • Draft manuscripts and publish results in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals
  • Use best-practices for reproducible coding
  • Contribute to developing and writing grant proposals
  • Guiding student clinicians in the areas of time management, efficient case flow, client communication and various diagnostic tests as well as restraint and venipuncture.
  • Patient receiving; organizing and assisting with all technical aspects of patient care
  • Orient and instruct veterinary students, interns and occasionally residents, in technical skills and procedures

Employees working in the laboratory must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.


Required Qualifications

  • Associates degree in Veterinary Technology, NYS licensure (or eligibility to be licensed), with 1-2 years of LVT experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with quantitative and qualitative research methodologies
  • Strong analytic and written communication skills are required.
  • Proficiency in at least one data analysis software
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, which include, but are not limited to, stressful situations, prolonged standing and kneeling, lifting heavy patients which may exceed 50 pounds.
  • Ability to restrain cats and dogs appropriately as well as feel comfortable handling feral/fractious cats.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Epidemiology, Public Health, or a related discipline.
  • Experience working with biomedical data preferred.
  • Experience with statistical models and epidemiologic methods preferred.
  • Previous veterinary private practice experience is a plus.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
  • This is a full-time three-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

While the regular business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks. Please note that you will be eligible for competitive shift differential pay for evenings, nights and weekends, along with generous holiday pay.

Who We Are:

The Cazer Lab broadly investigates the epidemiology of zoonotic and infectious diseases with computational and field studies. We are primarily interested in the development and spread of antimicrobial resistant bacteria among animals and humans. Specifically, we are investigating novel computational approaches to antimicrobial resistance surveillance to detect increases in resistance and quantify the impacts of mitigation approaches, such as antimicrobial use restrictions in livestock. We are also developing dashboards and visualization tools for antimicrobial resistance surveillance.
