The Counselor Therapist at Cornell Health's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) embedded in Athletics and Physical Education (A&PE) serves as a member of a multidisciplinary service team with primary responsibility for ameliorating mental health conditions and related issues typically experienced by student-athletes engaged in competitive intercollegiate sports at the NCAA Division I level. The A&PE embedded clinical provider reports directly to the Assistant Director of Counseling and Psychological Services and maintains a close collaborative relationship with the Senior Deputy Director of Athletics for the Student-Athlete Experience in A&PE. Physically located within the athletics department, this role provides single session therapy, short-term individual counseling, group workshops, and referral and outreach programming services, as well as additional services as needs arise. The Counselor Therapist serves as a point of contact for mental health education and prevention strategies across the Athletics department, and will consult with coaches, trainers, staff, and parents regarding student-athlete mental health issues.

Required Qualifications

  • Masters or Doctorate in social work, psychology, mental health counseling or related clinical field; with 3 - 5 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Licensed in New York State as a social worker, mental health counselor, marriage and family therapist or psychologist within 12 months of hire
  • Strong interest in entrenching clinical services within the culture of collegiate athletics, sports performance, and team dynamics.
  • Effective interpersonal, written, and electronic communications skills, including the ability to convey complex information in accessible terms to diverse or multicultural audiences
  • Understanding of, and compliance with, the ethical and legal issues involved in the provision of clinical services.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to establish, build and maintain effective working relationships based on respect, empathy and honesty with diverse groups and individuals
  • Ability to manage and carefully maintain confidential and private information; uses confidential, sensitive and/or private records and information, protects information appropriately

Preferred Qualifications

  • Training and experience as a Sports Psychologist or in high performance settings
  • Board Certification in Sport Psychology
  • Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC)
  • Experience working with athletic trainers, coaches, and athletics administrators.
  • Experience in college or professional student mental health and/or working with college-aged individuals or graduate student populations
  • Experience working in an integrated health care environment
  • Experience working independently and within novel teams
