Ithaca College COSTUME SHOP SUPERVISOR in Ithaca, New York

Manage and supervise the costume shop to include; budgeting, safe operation and upkeep of equipment, and directing student costume crews in all phases of costume construction. Perform and supervise a variety of duties in the construction of costumes for productions including fittings, cutting, draping, alterations, and repairs. Train and supervise wardrobe supervisors and costume crews and guide them through the process of dress rehearsals, performances, and strikes; Ensure the proper cleaning and storage of theatrical costume stock. Experience with hair, wigs, and makeup preferred.

Essential Duties:

  • Construct costumes for theatrical productions to include interpreting costume designer's renderings; determining garment construction procedures; drape, cut and pattern costumes to be constructed; construct garments using sewing machine and hand stitching following design and drawing prepared by costume designer; fit patterned costumes and alter patterns as necessary.

  • Supervise and instruct student assistants; monitor work for accuracy and completeness; schedule and instruct Theatre Practice student crews in the use of sewing machines, pressing irons and other costume apparatus; inspect finished products to ensure that design specifications are met.

  • Teach appropriate course(s) in costume construction each semester as determined by the chair of the department.

  • Manage costume shop including machine repairs as needed; order sewing notions and other supplies for the costume shop.

  • Manage costume budgets including authorizing the purchasing for productions, rentals, and travel.

  • Hire, train, schedule, and manage student work study positions in the costume shop.

  • Attend weekly production meetings.

  • Observe costumes during dress and technical rehearsals with costume designer and discuss needed alterations; supervise costume repairs during production.

  • Ensure proper laundering, dry cleaning, pressing and storage of costumes after the close of each production; return rental or borrowed costumes to appropriate places.

  • Maintain costume shop; issue garments to students and faculty for classes and productions and maintain related records.

  • Participate in the regular ongoing evaluation of Theatre Production and Design majors

Qualifications: BA or BFA degree in Theatre Technology or the equivalent professional experience and a minimum of two years experience in costume construction/wardrobe is required. Supervisory experience, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, the ability to handle multiple tasks and work under deadlines, prioritize tasks, and previous experience working with a diverse student population in a mentoring role is preferred. Experience with hair, wigs, and makeup is preferred.

Work Environment: This job requires working with equipment and machinery typical of a costume shop and costume storage (sewing machines, irons, dye vats, scissors, fabric, clothes, etc.).
