TCAT Apprentice Mechanic I in Ithaca, New York

<p>Position Summary: As an entry level mechanic, is trained in preventative maintenance (PM) of the transit fleet. Under close supervision, observes and assists in minor repair work on all or some of the following: diesel, gas and alternative fuel engines. <P> Essential Functions:

50% Is trained in and performs routine servicing and preventative maintenance including: lubrications, level checks, oil changes, dismounting and mounting tires, minor electrical repairs(such as light assembly).

35% Under close supervision, observe and assist in repair work in order to become familiar with component repair which includes: engine repair or replacement, tune-ups, automatic transmissions, drive line, air brakes, differential, body modifications, diesel and gas engine repair, electronic systems, emissions systems, wheelchair lifts.

<LI> completes records on all repair and maintenance work performed, <LI> takes direction from senior mechanics, <LI> becomes familiar with OSHA standards and develop safety-conscious work habits, <LI> assists mechanics with parts cleaning and washing of engines, <LI> acquires knowledge of DOT rules, and regulations, <LI> understands and adhere to TCAT policies and procedures. <LI> Develop the following abilities to: <LI> identify air brake valves and brake components <P>

Nonessential Functions: 15% Other duties as assigned by the supervisor including but not limited to:

<LI> learning the operation and maintenance of all shop equipment, hoist, air compressor, bus washer, jacks and other small tools, <LI> cleaning-up work areas, <LI> assisting in emergency road calls; makes minor repairs (light bulb change). <P>

Qualifications:

<LI> Must possess high school diploma, GED or equivalent with vocational/technical school training in auto/diesel mechanics. <LI> Must possess a commercial driver's license (CDL) with air brake endorsement or obtain CDL B with a passenger endorsement license within 3 months of hire date. <LI> Must pass a pre-employment drug test and be subject to random drug and alcohol testing. <LI> Must provide own basic mechanics tool set. <LI> Have demonstrated the ability to work effectively with peers and take direction. <LI> Possess good communication skills and be able to deal with fellow workers in a positive manner. <LI> Ability to read and follow written instructions. <LI> Ability to exercise good judgment with respect to bus repairs and equipment safety. <LI> Ability to use computer and access information. <LI> Must follow established policies and procedures of Tcat. <P>
