Job Description

As Principal Research Scientist I/II within AbbVie Drug Delivery Sciences, you will lead a small team while working cross-functionally as part of a talented, multidisciplinary R&D organization. Drug Delivery Sciences builds cutting-edge capabilities for the delivery of biologics and advancement of new products through early R&D. The ideal candidate must have experience in the development of early-stage biologic drug product formulations, have outstanding oral and written communication skills, and have the desire and capacity to grow as part of a dynamic, high performing team.

This position will be based on-site at our Irvine, CA location.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and early-stage development of next generation sustained release formulations for complex biologics

  • Lead a team of Ph.D.-level scientists.

  • Coordinate cross-functional activities with key stakeholders

  • Contribute to AbbVie's patent estate.

  • Responsible for compliance with all applicable Corporate and Divisional policies and procedures

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry/Pharmaceutical Sciences/Chemical Engineering/Materials Science

  • Candidates must have at least 8-10 years of experience in biologic formulation development.

  • Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time

Essential Skills and Abilities

  • A thorough knowledge of protein stability, degradation mechanisms and excipients will be required.

  • Experience in early-stage drug product development process for biologics will be required.

  • Experience in developing sustained release drug products is desirable but not essential.

  • Excellent scientific approach and strong problem-solving skills.

  • A solid track record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national-level conferences.

  • Good interpersonal and team skills.

  • An ability to operate in a highly dynamic and fast-paced environment.

  • A desire and capacity to learn, drive continuous improvement, and develop novel solutions to problems.
