Ford Motor Company HV EDS Components Design Engineer in Irvine, California

The EDS Components Design Engineer will be responsible for the execution of the different custom components required to support wire harness routing, retention, and assembly automation strategies. You will conceptualize, engineer, develop, validate, and support the launch of Electrical Distribution Systems for next generation Model e products. Seniority level will be determined based on experience; Junior through Senior Staff Engineer levels will be considered.

What you’ll be able to do:

  • Design innovative plastic components to solve Ford Advanced EV wiring harness routing strategies including channels, guides, shields, retainers, and grommets, owning these components from concept to production.

  • Develop and release detailed 3D CAD models and 2D component manufacturing drawings to enable build to print relation with suppliers.

  • Work with different suppliers to develop connection systems and accessories that will enable the usage of different wiring technologies.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure wire harnesses seamless integration considering design for manufacturing and assembly automation.

  • Support supplier sourcing and ensure supplier solutions and concepts meet DFM principles. Innovate and feedback suppliers to have the most cost-effective plastic components considering tooling and different materials specifics for the application.

  • Define and lead the design verification and production validation plans according to industry standards and/or the characteristics of the application at hand to maximize reliability and functionally of parts designed.

  • Provide technical support and guidance to production teams during the manufacturing and assembly of wire harness components.

  • Conduct research to identify the latest trends and technologies in wiring harness design and automated assembly process.

The minimum requirements we seek:

  • B.S. in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics or Industrial Engineering

  • 5+ years of experience designing and developing plastic components in an automotive or similar industry (i.e., Aerospace, Complex Medical Device)

  • 5+ years of experience using 3D tools (3DX, NX, etc.)

  • 5+ year of experience in a mass production setting launching new products.

Preferred Requirements :

  • Strong Mechanical Engineering fundamentals

  • Hands-on experience building and launching automotive products and vehicle prototyping.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Confluence, and Jira applications

  • Experience with instrumentation of prototype vehicles in a controlled lab environment

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • An eagerness to work cross-functionally in a dynamic environment where you are part of a high performing team.

  • A system approach to design and development with the desire and curiosity to strive for exceptional delivery execution and continuous improvement.

  • Experience deriving cost, manufacturability, reliability, and failure modes tradeoffs from based on specific designs.
