Job Summary

The Executive Director, Engineering Xumo will be responsible for leading a team & leading engineering projects for Client, Server Backend, Elixir & Data Engineering. Responsible for overseeing the implementation of the enterprise-wide technical vision and direction of the Engineering department. Implements business standards, goals, strategies and objectives (within assigned areas) that are competitive with industry standards and strives to arrive at those goals. Reviews annual and quarterly budgets. Leads a team of dynamic engineering staff and assures work performance is in adherence to company and industry standards. Acts as a technical resource to management across the department and lateral departments. Leads integrated work teams and provides leadership in cross-functional projects. Provides leadership and direction for diverse and complex functions. Contributes to the development of the organization's business strategy. Interprets business strategy and develops organizational objectives to align with this strategy. Typically manages multiple teams of professionals.

Xumo, a joint venture between Comcast and Charter, was formed to develop and offer a next-generation streaming platform on a variety of branded 4K streaming devices and smart TVs. Powered by Comcast’s global technology platform, Xumo devices and services feature an entertainment experience designed to make it easy for consumers to find and enjoy their favorite streaming content through a world-class user interface and voice search, and for partners to meaningfully connect and engage with millions of consumers.

Job Description

Additional Job Summary/Info:

The Xumo Engineering Executive Director will lead the Xumo Play business with key projects & team management responsibility. The role will focus overall tech development with a strong focus on collaboration with engineering & non-engineering teams, process development, budgeting & cost planning, people leadership & talent development. Key areas include:

OTT System Development

  • OTT Device Integration (with EntOS, AndroidTV, etc.)- client & backend server

  • End to end architecture design for integrated OTT/FAST/SVOD services

  • Data Engineering (including internal & external data)

  • Ensure compliance & governance for systems & processes

Strategic Technology Development

  • Core Technology design including business analysis

  • IP Acquisition

  • Engineering Process development & trend analysis (policies, audits, etc.)

  • Privacy/Security process development

Team/People Management

  • Resource management based on future business direction

  • Resources analysis for demand, current availability & priorities for filling between tech domains

  • Team structure & talent development

New Business Development

  • Tech development & partnership in new domains

  • Business opportunity exploration

Position is office based in Irvine, CA- 4 days/week & 1 day/week remote.

Secondary office location- Philadelphia, PA- 4 days/week in office & 1 day remote and monthly travel to Irvine, CA required & additional quarterly travel to Irvine, CA may be needed.

Required experience/Qualification:

  • 15+ years’ engineering experience with in-depth knowledge of OTT/Web/Mobile application, backend cloud server system, video technology, data system for digital video streaming services.

  • Ability to translate technology acumen to a nontechnical team.

  • Strong business partner and stakeholder background in OTT video streaming business

  • Must have good people skills, working in teams and as an individual contributor.

  • Ability to describe problems clearly & concisely in both written and oral forms and communicate both orally and in writing in a clear, professional, and pleasant manner.

  • Ability to design well-considered technical solutions for the critical business problems

  • Self-motivated with desire for continuous learning

  • Knowledge of the following technical landscape :

  • Online Video Streaming, Video Encoding/Decoding, Data Engineering, Data Analytics and Statistics

  • OTT Client Application Development, User Account Management, Payment/Billing/Entitlement technologies

  • Technology standard (ISO, FCC, MPA, W3C, SCTE, Security/Privacy Standards)

Core Responsibilities

  • Reviews and presents operating and capital budgets including forecasts of operations, development, testing and any specialized needs to senior management.

  • Oversees operations and ensures business strategies and objectives are being met in a structured and concise manner. Delivers strategies and objectives within the department and across the organization.

  • Evaluates overall work processes and standard procedures to ensure performance is to company and industry standards.

  • Continuously develops staff through ongoing training programs, operational procedures and policies and develops staff organizational and technical skills etc.

  • Sets the reporting standards and then works with the Manager of Engineering to analyze reports for such issues as schedule completions for testing, spend levels for NRE costs, yearly license costs etc.

  • Stays knowledgeable of competition and important emerging technologies and standards.

  • Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance.

  • Regular, consistent and punctual attendance. Must be able to work nights and weekends, variable schedule(s) and overtime as necessary.

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Salary:

Primary Location Pay Range: $206,454.38 - $309,681.56
