QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Iowa Teaching Certification (K-6 or K-12 Music endorsement)

  • Knowledge and experience in teaching general music to children

  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal(s)

SUPERVISES: N/A

JOB GOALS: Helps students grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through a variety of planned music experiences that include: singing, moving to music, playing instruments, creating and listening. A successful music teacher will also promote the overall mission of the school system, and work to maximize the educational opportunities available to each student.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan, conduct and evaluate instruction based on the district general music curricular scope and sequence which lead to fulfillment of department and district goals

  • Experience with, or desire to learn, the music education philosophies of Orff, Kodaly and/or Dalcroze in order to actively support the district’s general music curriculum

  • Evaluate and report student progress, both formally and informally

  • Communicate with parents and students regarding student progress, regularly and on special occasions as necessary

  • Work with staff in the building and general music department to plan and implement the curricular program, district requirements, and musical sharing sessions

  • Participate in regular professional development activities as required

  • Maintain clear communication with all colleagues at building and district level

  • Willingness to use materials (drumming kits, keyboard kits, music culture kits, Orff and percussion instruments) provided by the district to enhance student learning and motivation

  • Willingness to collaborate with other general music teachers in order to improve and enhance teaching skill for the purpose of positively effecting student achievement

  • The ability to create and maintain a positive learning community for students

  • Other duties as assigned

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • 184/186 Contract Days. Salary and calendar year to be established by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the District’s policy on Evaluation, State Statute, and any applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
