POSITION SUMMARY:

As a part of the Development team, the Donor Relations Manager will play a critical role in increasing donor support for Starfish Family Services by connecting the passions of individual and family donors with the mission of Starfish.  The Donor Relationship Manager will engage individuals and families with Starfish, inspire giving, and maintain relationships to assure retention and upgraded giving and involvement. This position will focus on development and implementing donor engagement strategies that help Starfish meet our ambitious revenue goals.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related field is required.

  • A Minimum of 3 - 5 years of experience in relationship-based fundraising is required. Preference given to candidates with demonstrated success in closing gifts of $10,000 and above.

     

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Qualify and maintain a caseload of mid-level and major gift donors, serving as the primary relationship manager for the portfolio.

  • Create and manage individual goals for each person or family in the caseload.

  • Create and execute individualized plans for each donor that are driven by their passions, interests, and communication preferences.

  • Leverage data and historic giving information as well as prospect research to identify opportunities.

  • Develop solicitation strategies for donors and prospects in support of the organization’s annual fund, planned giving, and special initiatives; ensure strategies are compatible and maximize opportunities with other existing campaigns and appeals.

  • Write and prepare grant requests for family foundations and support grant efforts for additional operational funds in partnership with the Director of Grants Administration.

  • Support the fundraising efforts of the Chief Philanthropy Officer and Chief Executive Officer in securing new and renewed gifts.

  • Maintain accurate and up to date records for each donor in the caseload utilizing the donor database (Raiser’s Edge).

  • Ensure proper donor recognition in all publications and other agreed upon recognition opportunities.

  • In partnership with the Director of Development and the Development team, provide support for the annual fundraising Gala, utilizing the event as an opportunity to solicit and engage donors within the caseload.

  • Working with the Chief Philanthropy Officer, develop a strategy for outreach to and stewardship of planned giving prospects and donors. 

     

    Performance Will Be Measured By:

  • Qualifying and disqualifying donors, including appropriate documentation.

  • Achieving overall agreed-upon revenue goals based on individual donor goals. This includes retention and upgrading of donors and cultivation of transformational gifts.

  • Development of a personal contact and ask plan that takes into account the individual donor’s interests, motivations, giving patterns, and ask and communications preferences.

  • Creating and writing effective offers, proposals, and asks. Regular and timely reporting back to the donor.

  • Management of people, process, deadlines, and budget while adhering to the policies and procedures of the organization.

     

    COMPETENCIES AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to listen to understand and adaptability to communicate with a wide range of individuals.

  • Ability to present information effectively in both formal and informal environments.

  • Ability to handle and protect sensitive and confidential information.

  • Commitment to upholding the highest level of customer service internally and externally.

  • Demonstrated ability to build positive and effective working relationships with individuals of various ages, cultures, backgrounds, and abilities.

  • Familiarity with supporting committees, executive leaders, and Board of Directors.

  • Experience with grant proposal writing preferred.

  • Ability and aptitude with Microsoft Office Suite and other technology necessary for successful day-to-day functioning in a business/office environment.

  • Experience with relationship management systems; experience with Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge preferred.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the intersection of race, gender, and poverty; must have commitment to social justice and racial equity.

  • Commitment to the children and families of the Metro Detroit area and to the mission of Starfish Family Services.

     

    LICENSING AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Valid driver’s license and / or reliable transportation.
