The Position

Boehringer Ingelheim is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join our dynamic Global Data Science team in Global Healthcare Affairs & Patient Engagement. In this role, you will have the chance to apply your advanced data science skills to solve non-routine analysis problems in the later stages of the stream of value (e.g., post proof of clinical principle, launch, marketing, post-marketing phase). You will be a key player in unlocking the full potential of our data, using advanced analytics and artificial intelligence, such as machine learning, causal inference, and natural language processing.

As a Senior Data Scientist at Boehringer Ingelheim, you will not only identify problems but also work closely with other teams to create solutions that could potentially impact millions of lives. You will have the opportunity to develop applications that enable smart decision-making and create solutions that serve patients.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Dive headfirst into executing data science projects across various functions of the human pharma business unit. Utilize your expertise in artificial intelligence, i.e. machine learning, causal inference, and natural language processing to solve challenging, non-routine analysis problems.

  • Collaborate very closely with teams from the Thereapeutic Areas (such as Marketing, Market Access, HEOR, Digital Health), Medicine (such as Global Integrated Evidence / RWE), Regions (such as Go-to-Market), and with data and technical experts such as data stewards, project/program managers, and IT, enabling the business to harness their data for smart decision-making. Your role will be crucial in fostering cross-functional collaboration with the shared goal of improving human health.

  • Take responsibility for building computational models, discovering insights, and identifying opportunities. Use statistical and algorithmic methods, machine learning, and data visualization techniques to turn raw data into actionable insights.

  • Ideate, design and architect business-facing solutions with large language models, including a main conversational agent and supplementary models for contextual support.

  • You work will go beyond the numbers. You consult business teams by leveraging your data science expertise and scientific problem-solving skills to make a tangible difference in the world of human health.

  • Manage medium to large-sized projects, potentially coordinating with external support. Potentially evaluate and build partnerships that leverage data science and data-driven solutions. Your leadership will drive our projects to success.

  • Actively participate in cross-functional digital/data strategic initiatives. Your input and collaboration will be key in driving our digital transformation and achieving our strategic objectives.

  • Step into a mentorship role, advising junior colleagues on technical methodologies. Your knowledge and guidance will shape the next generation of data scientists at Boehringer Ingelheim.

  • Provide thought leadership by researching and instilling industry-leading practices. Conduct experiments and collaborate with industry leaders to keep Boehringer Ingelheim at the forefront of data science innovation.

  • Act as a role model for agile approaches to initiatives and launches. Your agile mindset will help us adapt quickly to changes and deliver results more efficiently.

Requirements

  • Possess a Master's degree, PhD, or equivalent experience in a quantitative field such as Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Bioinformatics, etc., with 5+ years of professional experience in successfully building and bringing into action data science solutions in a complex business environment.

  • Demonstrated experience in working with large data sets and distributed computing technologies, such as Spark, as well as experience with cloud computing and popular machine learning frameworks.

  • Professional development experience in programming (Python/R) and experience with SQL or NoSQL database systems is a must.

  • Strong ability to build and sustain productive collaborative relationships with business partners and colleagues.

  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate technical topics and analysis results to business stakeholders, including senior business leaders to influence data driven decisions is a must.

  • Change Management Expertise: Solid experience in change management, demonstrated through several high-impact business transformation projects.

  • Technological Acumen: Broad understanding of current technologies and technological developments, with the ability to evaluate potential benefits for data science projects.

  • Data Science and Agile Collaboration: Relevant experience in data science, complemented by collaboration experience in an agile software development team.

  • Experience with natural language processing and implementing Large Language Models in business context is strong plus.

  • Familiarity with real-world-data such as claims and EMR data is a strong plus.

  • Experience with digital health applications is a plus.
