Job Description:

Primary Purpose of Role:

This position combines the core commercial and strategic responsibilities of a Commodity Manager along with project management skills required to support assigned direct material contracting for gears and shafts.

The Commodity Manager develops and manages working relationships with both internal stakeholders and suppliers of materials and services. The Commodity Manager leads internal stakeholders in the development and implementation of recommended strategies and goals for assigned materials and services. These strategies support business objectives related to short term and long term supply continuity. The Commodity Manager collaborates with the functional stakeholders in the resolution of supplier issues and in identifying opportunities for improvements.

The Commodity Manager is responsible to lead supplier negotiations - including the agreements and associated terms and conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the immediate functional Purchasing resource to functional senior leadership and their respective staffs.

  • Active team participant on program management teams with respect to compliant and timely development of sourcing solutions for projects and other outside services. This requires adherence to the associated corporate, Purchasing, and applicable regulations or procedures on several simultaneous projects.

  • Recommends innovative alternatives that drive mutually beneficial solutions for the business owners, the company, and the supplier; applies critical thinking in evaluating strategic sourcing alternatives.

  • Leads supplier negotiations in support of executing purchase orders and supply agreements for materials and services while ensuring supplier’s conformance to company’s terms and conditions.

  • Manages agreements and ensures commercial requirements are proactively addressed; partners closely with legal department in driving critical contract language.

  • Supports business owner in the development of statements of work, Service Level Agreements (SLAs), implementation, and transition plans to ensure effective service and material solutions.

  • Analyzes commodity spend data, market trends, emerging issues, and other dynamics along with the assigned functional business owner- to develop longer term strategies.

  • Trains newer commodity managers on the commercial aspects of procurement, systems, and technical aspects of the commodities represented on the deck.

  • Leverages enterprise software solutions to identify procurement opportunities, solutions to various issues, and to realize cost savings.

Competencies and Behaviors:

Required:

  • Exposure to corporate environment or manufacturing and assembly processes.

  • Understanding of contract language and commercial requirements.

  • Demonstrated negotiation, analytical, time management and organizational skills.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to be a trusted advisor to stakeholders and senior leadership.

  • Communicate effectively and build strong, sustainable relationships with both internal stakeholders and vendors.

  • Balances time between daily operation activities and strategic planning/projects.

  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Proficient with SAP and Ariba, or other ERP / P2P solutions.

  • Subject matter expert level experience in procurement categories

  • Project management skills

Preferred

  • Automotive or manufacturing industry experience (gear and shaft manufacturing a plus)

  • Knowledge of should cost software development processes/standards

  • Capable of interpreting market data

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (Related degrees include: Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Information Technology, Business, Law etc.).

Preferred

  • Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP)

  • Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM)

  • Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM)

  • Certified Professional in Supplier Diversity (CPSD)

  • Certified Six Sigma Green Belt

Experience:

Required:

  • 5+ years’ in procurement or commercial contracts experience

  • Vendor Management or Supplier Relationship Management experience.

Preferred

  • 7+ years’ buying experience in direct material with deep costing experience

  • No direct management responsibilities

  • Frequently interacts with leadership up direct management chain and direct team members. Occasionally interacts with peers within broader function or across functions.

  • Demonstrates good judgement in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

  • Individual contributor or may coordinate and supervise activities of non-exempt/hourly workers.

  • Work typically impacts direct peers, supervisors, cross functional partners and projects they may lead.
