Peerless Pump, an Indianapolis based subsidiary of Grundfos, is seeking an experienced Machinist I to join its Horizontal Machining Team.

This position reports directly to the Production Supervisor and will operate daily out of the Indianapolis, IN facility (Mon-Fri).

Relocation for this position cannot be supported and qualified candidates must have authorization to work in the USA without support.

What is the job about?

The Machinist I is responsible to perform complete setup and operations for various types of manual machines (including but not limited to lathe, mills, drills and grinders).

Your main responsibilities:

  • Read blueprints, drawings, specifications, etc. to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.

  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as planer mills, drills, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.

  • Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut.

  • Observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.

  • Verify conformance of finished work piece to prints and specifications and perform secondary operations such as deburr, chip removal, bushing, tapping, drilling, etc.

  • Provide training and instruction to other employees as required; Performs manual and electronic record keeping an information retrieval functions.

  • Perform work, promote teamwork and communicate in conjunction with our culture and corporate standards (Safety/Environmental, Quality, Continuous Improvement, Communication, Internal Controls, etc.).

  • Plan sequence of operations; Locate and use proper fixtures and machine attachments; Determine method of work holding and clamping required; Determine most efficient speeds, feeds, depths of cuts, and number of cuts; Determine and select tooling, cutters, blades and grinding wheel required.

  • Inspect parts for conformance to prints and specifications.

  • Part layout when fixtures are not available.

  • Performs manual and electronic record keeping and information retrieval functions.

  • Perform secondary operations such as deburring, chip removal, bushing installation, drilling, and tapping.

Posting, Reporting and Work Relations:

This position will report to a Production Supervisor and may also take functional direction from the APU Manager. The role will also work with members of Engineering and Quality teams, Maintenance, and Safety.

Your background

We imagine that you have:

High School Diploma, GED/HSE/HiSET, or equivalent *required

1-3 years manual machining (including but not limited to mills, drills and grinders) experience *preferred.

Competencies

  • Able to read and interpret drawings, specifications, setup sheets, etc.; use precision measuring instruments (calipers, mics, etc.), gages, manual and powered hand tools.

  • Intermediate knowledge of blueprint reading, manufacturing principles (Safety, Quality, Lean, Process Flow, etc.)

  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds, Ability to bend, squat, sit, walk, and stand for at least 8 hours a day

  • Ability to use basic shop math (decimals, fractions, geometry, etc.)

  • Ability to read GD&T symbols.

  • Able to use various types of manual machines (presses, balancers, straighteners, cut off saw)

  • Experience using cranes, hoist, screw jacks, hydraulic jacks

  • Basic computer skills in SAP and Microsoft Office

  • Demonstrated strong work ethic (including attendance), strong organizational skills and strong communication skills (written and oral).

Work Conditions

This role will be hands on work in a non-air conditioned environment. This role will require the ability to be on feet most of the day.
