Director, Tooling & Chemical Engineering Management

Job Description:

Primary Purpose of Role:

The Director of Tooling & Chemical Engineering Management is responsible for the overall safety, performance, and continuous improvement for Tool Room & Cutter Grind Operations that support all HQ manufacturing plants and Engineering Operations prototype/testing requirements. This responsibility also includes purchasing, managing appropriate inventory levels, distribution, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives for all perishable/durable tooling & chemicals used across the entire facility.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Directly manages 5 salaried team members (M2-M3 levels) with indirect management of 8 technical salaried employees, 58 hourly team members (45 skilled trades and 13 MST/Oilers).

  • Responsible for managing employee life-cycle including interviewing, hiring, training, developing, managing performance, participating in compensation reviews, and terminations.

  • Accountable for developing and managing departmental operating budgets of $9M expense and $3M capital (equipment sustainment & new tooling).

  • Accountable for the implementation of a new tooling management system that improves inventory control & management, tooling cost management, efficiency of tooling distribution, and cost reduction initiatives. This includes the implementation of $2.5M in capital in 2024 – 2025. (Tooling expenditures are approximately $14M annually.)

  • Responsible for chemical purchases, inventory, plant utilization reporting, recycling, lab testing, new chemical trials, continuous improvement initiatives, and capital projects implementation. (Chemical expenditures are approximately $10M annually.)

  • Supports operations by ensuring tooling, gaging, and fixtures are capable and ready as required to meet demand for both existing and new programs. This includes reverse engineering, design build components and interfacing regularly with design engineers / tool designers to fabricate new prototype, production tooling, gaging or parts.

  • Responsible for tracking key performance metrics including safety injuries, cost, work backlogs, cutter grind turnaround, and preventive maintenance performance. This includes being a champion for an Operational Excellence pillar within Facilities to help drive continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Interfaces with peers and Plant Leadership related to support services.

  • Facilitates a weekly Maintenance Managers meeting with key topics on Safety work orders, open red tags, open leak work orders, labor relations/recruiting updates, and other maintenance management topics.

  • Ensures team complies with terms of collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or 8 years of equivalent experience in Tool Room / Cutter Grind Operations

Preferred

  • Masters degree in Related Field of Study

Experience:

Required:

  • 8+ years of prior management experience

  • Experience with sharpening of cutting tools including hobs, shaper cutters, broaches, shave cutters, and miscellaneous drills and reamers.

Preferred

  • 10+ years of prior management experience

  • Leadership experience in an UAW environment

  • Visual Manufacturing program experience

Scope Factors:

  • Director: Seasoned leader with responsibility for managing similar activities of multiple departments, work units, brands, or a large facility

  • Third level of management from COO; reporting to Executive Director of Facilities.

  • Manager of others in the management track (Likely M1,M2,M3) or team of professional/technical employees

  • Occasionally interacts and presents to CEO Staff and senior leadership team. Frequently interacts with peers of the same level or lower across functions. Interaction is both internal and external.

  • Manages a team of managers or programs, policies or functions of considerable scope and impact

  • Makes final decisions on administrative or operational matters and ensures operations effective achievement of objectives

  • Controls resources and policy formation in area of responsibility

  • Erroneous decisions will have a serious impact on the overall success of functional, division, or company operations
