Director, Corporate Engineering

Primary Purpose: The Director, Corporate Engineering is responsible for leading the Corporate Engineering team to develop and implement new technologies, processes and equipment strategies to achieve organizational objectives. This key position will have direct ownership for established goals around large growth and maintenance capital projects, downtime minimization, engineering aspects of process safety management, cost savings initiatives and ensuring overall quality.

This role and the Corporate Engineering department are new to the organization and will have the opportunity to help establish engineering practices across the company. This role will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer.

Essential Functions & Requirements:

  • Ensures Health & Safety is the number one goal by following policies, processes, and acting in a safe manner at all times

  • Leads and mentors the cross-functional engineering team to develop best practices in identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving all types of processes or production issues

  • Demonstrates, teaches, and applies principles of engineering and technical problem-solving

  • Develops and implements methods, processes, and procedures that will improve existing practices, eliminate failures and reduce operating costs

  • Identifies best practices and applies those to other facilities with the goal towards standardization, cost savings, uptime improvement and a preventative maintenance approach

  • Partners with other departments to ensure that engineering objectives and daily activities are supporting the organization's needs

  • Develops and communicates strategies goals aligned with company objectives and translates those into specific performance targets, action plans and associated metrics

  • Maintains accountability for achieving objectives established for the engineering team and the organization, as well as determining and controlling departmental resource requirements and budgets

  • Provides leadership for process and equipment cost analysis that contributes to improved performance and establishes targets for, and projects to support, annual cost saving initiatives

  • Assists with the automation of current processes to control costs, drive consistency and meet demand

  • Participates in technical problem-solving for customers and suppliers as circumstances require

  • Owns project management for large capital expenditure engineering projects and ensures they meet established goals including time, quality, cost and profitability targets

  • Provides engineering expertise in the areas of tooling, prints, product specifications, product maintenance, raw materials and outside purchases throughout the organization

  • Support Company's relationships with regulatory agencies as well as engineering aspects of permitting to allow for efficient approvals; develops and ensures that repair engineering data is in compliance with corporate and regulatory policies

  • Coordinates with other members of the management team and keeps them informed of project status and performance versus budget and schedule

  • Reviews state-of-the-art engineering developments and makes recommendations to the management team on cost-effective additions and / or modifications to meet department and corporate goals

  • Completes all technical tasks in line with customer and corporate expectations, budgets, and schedules; reviews and approves proposals, recommends and implements cost-saving or time-saving changes

  • Participates in acquisition due diligence as required

  • Manages technical vendors and consultants to ensure contractual alignment, quality, timeliness, and cost

  • Assesses self and team capabilities through performance evaluation processes and determines appropriate training needs and recommends participation in training programs as needed

  • Provides management, mentorship, coaching and development to department employees; supports personal goals as well as company succession planning

  • Maintains ability to travel as required, up to 30% of the time

  • Performs other duties as assigned

    Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (required); Mechanical specialization (preferred)

    Experience:

  • 10+ years of project engineering / production / maintenance experience (required)

  • 5+ years of experience managing people (required)

  • Previous experience with Process Safety Management OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 (preferred)

  • Previous experience with Risk Management Plan EPA 40 CFR Part 68 (preferred)

    Competencies:

  • Proficiency in manufacturing processes and Lean methodologies with strong problem-solving and project management skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and maintain composure in a high-stress, high-energy environment

  • Strong ability to influence teams in and outside of the engineering department

  • Proactive orientation with a focus on continuous improvement and providing constructive feedback

  • Ability to manage complex and aggressive project schedules and deliver results on time and to specification

  • Regular and predictable attendance to perform the functions and requirements of this role
